Have a rucksack with alternative flashing LEDs in the left and right strap.

Without attracting the attention of the plod.

Or as it's not part of the bike - what come back could their be?

Probably get hassle if they were blue. Orange ones would look like indicators, so that's just stupid.

Why would you want to more to the point? Just go for the reflective stuff.

You have a far larger and brighter headlight. What makes you think that a couple of twinkling LEDs would help?

Can't see it being a legality issue though.

White to the front, red to the rear and you're fine.

Flashing orange denotes a slow vehicle.

All totally pointless though because they aren't looking in their mirrors and as such, wont see you. If they are looking in their mirrors, they have already seen you and are ignoring you deliberately. I've even had them dip their rearview mirror because they found the view of my headlight sat squarely in it too bright.

A combination of a blue-ish/bright white headlight bulb flashed in their mirror and wearing a yellow hi-viz jacket with lots of retroreflective stuff on MIGHT give them the mistaken impression you are on a police bike in the dark.

Approaching at rediculously high speed also seems to trigger the ones who are actually looking to move across.

It's something I made myself a bank of 21 LEDs on the left and the same on the right - VERY bright

Just looking at the legal point - I'm I right in thinking as it's on the rucksack plod can't pursue?

What it's on makes no difference provided you follow the rules outlines above. So white front, red rear, no orange, or blue.

does it matter if they are flashing alternatively - left then right?

As long as they are white facing the front it's not an issue?

This Is the section of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations that prohibits flashing lights and it's exemptions.

So yes it is illegal to have flashing lights regardless of colour unless it falls under those exemptions.

And before you try claiming C as an exemption you can't just invent your own special warning devices Wink

The main issue you will be faced with is convincing a magistrate that having them attached to your person as opposed to the vehicle excludes you from the act. As it seems to be a bit of a grey area.

Flashing isn't cool. Thumbs Down

So you're coming up behind traffic, with an oddly-placed flashing light... you're going to distract the shit out of every person who bothers to look in their mirror as they try and work out what you are, what's going on and whether it's relevant to them.

Cagers on their morning commute are generally still half asleep, happy to sit daydreaming in lane 3 at 72mph with Evans on the radio and a coffee in their hand.

Put some yellow hi-vis square stickers on the front of a white bike, come steaming up behind them at a fair lick and when near give them several quick flashes of full beam in regular patterns.

Amazingly they seem to comply with the Highway Code almost immediately...

Em, no.

Reflective strips reflect light colin, so they do not look brighter in the dark in the abscence of a light source to reflect.

I thought you would have understood that Wink

I'll eat my lid if doing that doesn't get you nicked in short order.

Whether you're charged, prosecuted and convicted is a far more open question. You're not going to get a straight answer to that except from a Magistrates' bench.

under those regulations it states 'no vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which automatically emits a flashing light.' operative word in that sentence is VEHICLE - if its fitted to a bag then it is not fitted to the vehicle Thumbs Up

Maybe I'm wrong, but in terms of legality , it should be fine.

Couple of years ago in a BikeSafe event there were some guys selling vests and jackets with leds and flashing lights, I asked them if it would be legal to use that on the road and they told me that if the lights are on you and not on the vehicle is perfectly legal.

Still, I wouldn't use it, cagers are easily distracted Smile

Yes, but do you want the people in close proximity to you to be even more distracted than usual?

The issue is that there is no statement of what consists of a vehicle It, either way it is an offence that goes straight to court, so you would have to prove to a magistrate that what you did was not intentionality deceptive to other road users. The other flip side is the precedent that would be set if a court allowed this, it would open the way for any tom dick and harry to cover themselves in flashing blue, green, red and purple lights, which can't be a good thing.

Your playing a risky game with one law the police take very seriously!

The look bright because of the absence of light when headlights hit the strips it near reflects back incredibly bright, much more so during the day.

This bit supplies the defence.

Quote:

(2) Paragraph (1) does not apply in respect of–

no grey area.
