Hi do power commanders set up on a rolling road really make a big difference to 1000cc bike. Or can you just fit one and down load a map to suit and still feel a big difference?

yes, yes and sometimes

it generally makes the bike run alot smother,
you can download a map that is close to your setup, but how close??
every bike is different, you won't know if you are running lean in places unless you dyno it,

if you are going to fork out alot of cash for a power c then you may as well spend a wee bit more and get it properly set up for your bike

Cost of the PC was around £280 when I bought mine a few years back. The place I took it to supplied, fitted and mapping it for £400. That was an hour or so fitting, then three or four hours on the dyno.

If you're forking out for a PC, may as well map it IMHO.

im looking at getting an SP1 in the next few week's and hear they really need a power commander to make them rideable at lower rpm's, 3 to 4 hours on a dyno with an sp1 is likely to drain the worlds oil resources, who pays for all this fuel? Laughing

On early Fuel Injected hondas, the map on the ECU was SHOCKING to say the least. It used to always hunt at low revs in low gears in town, making for a lot of work.

The power commander, on a generic map seemed to eliminate the low end jerkiness on my 929. But, there is no substitute to getting the fuelling mapped out properly to how you want it. If anything, it liberates the midrage as a result any factory-set flat spots to get through emissions.

my 600rr is jerky as hell at low speed low rpm's, i imagine it will be even worse on a big twin Shocked

Indeed, first gear on my CBR600f is too snatchy and the fuelling below 3k far too uneven to be any use at very low speeds. Taking mini roundabouts requires slipping the clutch and keeping the revs up otherwise it is far too sensitive even to tiny throttle movements.

They built a full custom map in 1 hour? That's impressive or a bodge. I suppose it depends how much of a mess the fuel curve is in the first place.

Depending on the bike some PC3's are just fuel but R1's are both fuel & ignition. If you are looking for extra power change the exhuast first.

You can just install a map and it can make a difference.

If you are going to get it Dyno'd make sure the valves, throttle bodies are in sync etc first then dyno it.
Also ask them to do a couple while in on the bench ie a max power and fuel economy it wont cost much more.

I made my own map using ones that were available then adjusted the factors to suit me.

My present map is standard upto 5000rpm then racer from there on I also use the accelerator function in the lower rev range so if I snap the throttle quick I get an 20% more fuel for the first 5 seconds then it goes back to standard which helps with fuel consumption.

If you want to something to give you loads of extra power don;t bother, if you want something to smooth your bike out and make it run better then buy it. I got one on my TDM and with a downloaded map it was miles better.

Dynojet UK took six hours to set up my Daytona 600. My girlfriend at the time was not best pleased. Laughing

I was left with a nice smooth curve, and went from 94 bhp to 101. It wasnt a bodge, Dave Hammond just knows his onions.

I don't get how he did a complete custom map within an hour. Was it at just full throttle? If I recall correctly you can program the PC for different percentages of throttle. How he did it in an hour and it took the guys at dynojet six hours. Fair enough you can probably subtract a few hours when you can take out familiarity with a bike. They were doing it for free too, since they had no maps for my bike on their website at the time.

If it's a suzuki then they don't need a power commander, you can edit the ECU directly via a yoshi box etc.

I dont know if it still applies, but Dynojet used to charge a set fee of £90 to do a custom map, regardless of how long it took.
Thumbs Up

Maybe they were monkeys! Wink I used to have an NC 30 and decided to have it set up on a dyno as I had a scorpion can on it. I took it to a well known dyno center in Ashford to be told that my can wasnt all that, so they would sell me an acro, a dyno jet kit and a K & N filter. And I wouldnt believe the power increase I would get! They wanted well over 500 quid of my cash. Feck that said I and walked off. Outside a chappie followed me out and said if you want it done go talk to DHR. Off i popped to be told my cans fine, dyno jet kits dont really work on NCs, you wont get much of a power increase as NC motors are allready in a high state of tune. As for K & Ns, they stopped making them ages ago as the high price of standard ones dropped and they dont flow any better than those! So for the grand some of 85 quid, he shimmed my carb needles and balanced them too, modded my air filter and had a general tweek. it was then put back on the dyno, the original curve was improved all the way through the range and I had gained 3 bhp.
So as I said, some people know there onions?

With Triumph you can do it with £12 odb2 - USB cable and a free bit of software.
