ok .. so Mrs. Silky has finally killed the Scenic (she ruins cars).
So its time to buy a new (2nd hand) car.
But, I have never really bought one .. the past cars have all sort of landed in my lap (Scenic was a neighbour selling .. car before that was my father in laws.. and one before that was my cousins.. car before that I was given ... etc etc ).

So: Need advice ? ... Go private ? .. worth going dealer ? .. any recommendations in surrey/sussex area ?
What cars are reliable and able to withstand the missus driving it ?
Budget is as low as possible .. anything above 3k will eat into my biking plans budget (I am sure you understand).
No really little cars (like fiat pandas) ... and cheap to run (I am guessing diesel).

Thanks in advance + Karma

I'm staying out of this. I needed a practical car for the rain.

I bought a 2 seater. That leaks. Doh!

From what I've seen dealers seem to be very over-priced!

Ideally find the car make and model that you like and then just have a wonder around Ebay motors - any private sale will most probably go cheaper than at a dealers, do you have anyone mechanically knowledged you know because if what you think is a decent car comes up you could go and have a look at it Razz

As for diesel I'd probably get an old 306 1.9 turbo, just over a grand for one in relatively good condition and should last forever!

Thumbs Up

Hi

How are the cars destroyed? Driven into things, blown up or the electrics fried by going through the car was with the sunroof open?

How big a car is needed?

Not always. Diesel saves on fuel but you tend to pay more for the car, they often require more servicing and some of the possible bills can be quite hideous (ie, likely if the clutch goes on a newish one the dual mass flywheel will be shot and that will double the cost of the clutch replacement). Likewise if the turbo goes.

Do 10k a year and the difference between 30mpg and 45mpg is only £600~£700 (even ignoring diesel costing more), so very easy to wipe out any savings.

All the best

Keith

1) This is the source of constant arguments / heated discussions between us.
In theory she does nothing ... I have driven with her and she drives quite sedately and doesnt thrash cars.
However, her historical record is appalling.
In fact, 2 cars she has passed onto me due to them breaking down all the time. .. only for me to drive them for a year and not have an issue (ish).
eg: Pug 306 - bought cheap from cousin as a little run about ... she drives it for 6 months and its constantly stalling on her at lights / failing to re- start / etc.
Its then 'given ' to me .. I have driven it to work for past year, thrashed it and abused it ... and only had it stall once.
The Scenic we have owned for 2 years ... in that time its had the rear diff go / front ball joint / alternator / power steering / suspension / dash lights / endless list.
Time before that, I got a nice merc e300 from a mate .. ran it for a month or so and it was a dream. She gets hold of it and within 6 months the windows stopped working / front suspension started knocking / she eventually blew it up in the high street (a huge bang and lots of smoke).
Shes mental.

2) Car size .... Be quite happy with a 306 and bigger size.
I would prefer Audi A4 size .. that sort of thing.
No Huge people carriers ... and No little mini cars.

3) Good advice that .... hmmmm ! worth thinking about.
So, its prob only worth getting diesel if she is doing motorway miles etc. ? right ?

Hello Silky, have you had a look at the Nissan Note? Might be worth a look, probably just a shade over your 3k. Happy hunting Thumbs Up

Need to work it out for the particular model, how many miles you will do and what kind of driving you do. Factor in common failures and how much extra you will spend on a diesel (plus any VED differences).

For a laugh Parkers have a bit of their site to compare diesel and petrol car running costs. I lobbed in a Fiat Panda 1.2 and it compared it to the diesel 1.3. It reckoned that the diesel would break even cost wise after 323,464 (27 years at 12k per year). OK, extreme example but you can see what I mean.

All the best

Keith

Remember to add int he cost of VED (road tax) as Keith says.

Sometimes this swings it back into the favour of diesel - petrols tend to be a fair bit more expensive.

And bought her a 2nd hand Saab Smile

And with it weighing in at around 17.5 tonnes, you don't have to worry about any high speed mis-haps Thumbs Up

I actually think its quite quick.
Its really good from roll on.. ie: 40mph and you decide to get a move on.

But then 2 cars ago I was driving about in one of these:

Silky mate i can see the problem with the cars you have had, they are all french, probs gonna get slated but i dont care, i had same problems with french cars over the past years and none of them agree with me, my first was a citreon ax gt, now im a mechanic so know a fair bit about what to look for, checked the car out completely, had it for about 7 months driving down the road and all of a sudden my drivers floor fell out and it was a real flintstone moment!!!! needless to say i scrapped that biatch, second was a peugeot 306 d turbo, bought it and the bloke obviously knew it had a cold start problem hence meeting me at my house (although he was swapping for my crosser so couldnt ride that on the road!!!) so next morning struggles to start, thought ok test the glow plugs and 2 not working, bought some but never got round to doing it, finally got round to doing it, changed them all went fine started awsomely, went to fill up with diesel, brimmed it costing me 50 quid, drove home, picked up my brother, started it up and bang the valves hit the pistons bye bye engine and 50 quids worth of diesel!!!, never bought french again, i even had a high mileage impreza turbo and never a fault, have a vw bora 1.9 tdi and its a wonderful car, returns 53mpg round town and 63mpg on a run, never had to replace anything in 18 months ownership apart from oil/filter and some front brakes but this is general maintaince, my advice, buy german small tdi like mine, good reliable cars and parts aint too bad on price

You twat, might as well buy an Alfa Romeo, at least the stereo is good to listen to for when you are waiting for the RAC.

A little harsh .... but I wont stoop to your level and start throwing rudeness around about your wifes minge smelling of man cheese.
I am far too mature for that.

I had a Saab 9000CSE a few years ago.
That was a great / reliable / sturdy car.
And this 9-3 seems to be of the same ilk.
Its got a nice stereo anyway (one of the upgraded JVC jobbies with bluetooth and extra speakers and a big touch screen etc.

I know its not the lightest.
I know that its an old mans car (I am an old man ... so I can kind of justify it).
I know it might not be as fast as an Alfa etc.
But I bought it due to it being a bargain and something that we can use as a spare car.

Some pics and details.
80 yr old man down road ... bought the Saab brand new .... eyesight going ... this causes him to clip the bumpers and one wing EVERY TIME he pulls into his drive. (this is the only damage / scratches).
DVLA take his licence away 6 months ago.

Mrs. Silky mention to the old boys wife that we are looking for a spare car.
Old girl says "oh! why dont you buy Geralds ... now he isnt allowed to drive".
Its a 1999 Saab ... and he wants £2000. I stroll round expecting something abused and find this:

1999 Saab 9-3 Sport.
FULL Supplier Dealer Service History.
36,000 Miles.

Brand New P6000 tyres all round.
Upgraded everything (Stereo, Electric pack, Type of leather etc ect)

Engine bay is immaculate:
https://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t69/silky666/Cars/enginebay.jpg

This is the engine filler bit !
https://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t69/silky666/Cars/enginetop.jpg

Pic doesnt really do the car justice - It is mint throughout.
The interior looks like new etc.
