Street parking and ground anchors

Don't know if this has been said before but surely not too much effort for local councils to provide ground anchors at street motorcycle bays? If they can provide frames to lock bicycles to, why not ground anchors? Heck, you could even get the insurance companies to sponsor them.

Think of all the man-with-a-van thefts that would prevent, police time saved and reduction in associated crime.

I'm fortunate enough to have secure parking at work, but loathe taking my bike anywhere else.

This assuming you can find a free bay in central London to park.

Because you'd still need to carry a hefty decent chain around with you for it to make a blind bit of difference which very few people are going to do if they're just out and about.

A Pay & Display car park near me in Suffolk do provide secure ground anchors in their free motorcycle bays. There are always some bikes locked to them with big chains.

I accept such provision is the exception rather than the rule but I was impressed when I saw it and doesn't seem to be a downside so would be nice to see it more widespread.

I asked my local council (Rochdale) to install ground anchors at my local sports centre (frequented twice a year by the travelling community). They installed Y anchors straight away. Don't ask don't get.

Very much depends on the location. It's going on for 3 years now since Glasgow Cooncil first acknowledged the under-provision of motorcycle parking near my office. They have actually proposed some now and ran a consultation back in June. They've yet to actually make a decision.

This is for putting a piece of paint on an unused bit of road.

The thought of asking them to put in anchors...

I got asked to put something in to lock bikes to last year, but no real money towards it. I just plonked a few panels of Alpha guard rail as close to the edge of the foot way as I could so that bikes in the on street bays could at least get a chain between it and their wheel or frame.

I also put in two purpose made bollards with a double loop on them on a bay near Columbia Road flower market, the problem with those was that you could only lock two bikes to each one and if one of those parked badly the second might not get near enough to use their lock as well.

Today I was sent a map of all the motorbike thefts in my borough for the last few years, the old bill are asking for locking posts/rails as the bikes are being stolen and used in robberies more than ever before. There will be money put aside for next financial year to put something up on the bays that attract the thieves. Handy for me when I'm out and about as well of course.

This is one thing that Peterborough City Council gets right.

Almost all the bays are very central (better than cars in most places,) free and have anchors. They're also located in places with heavy footfall. I'd be genuinely shocked if my bike got nicked with even meagre security measures.

The last one at the train station is the worst, but it's still free (parking a car costs around £9 a day there) and right next to the British Transport Police, which should be a decent deterrant.

In London, I have seen anchors fit by the councils in many bays of Chelsea and in some Westminster bays near Paddington.
Carrying a chain is hard on a bike but perfectly feasible on a scooter. When I had a Honda SH I used to carry my 3-metre, 13-mm, 10kg Pragmasis chain under the seat.

I agree. Peterborough council looks pretty interested in providing space for bike parking, and it looks like there's a strong take up of the facilities too.

Where I live places like train stations and car parks do have bike parking areas that look similar, but you'd only get 5-6 bikes at the most in some of them.

I suppose, it's a complex equation between how much more money they get from another 2car parking spaces, vs how well used the car park is etc. But if your paying £9 a day to park cars, then it's almost like helping would be commuters onto two wheels instead. I bet over 50% of your bike Park area is filled with people saying '' fuck this £9 a day bollocks, I'm getting me a bike or scooter and gonna save me a fortune instead''.

Man, so they are everywhere - just not here in London, although I need to check out Red Lion square.

Hope yet that they are more readily available.

My local ASDA has a row of individual bike bays, each with their own ground anchor.

The local Tesco and Sainsbury don't even have bike parking.

I emailed Tesco asking if they were going to follow ASDA's lead and was advised "don't worry, you can park in a car bay".

Peterborough's got more security than my last house.

I'd happily pay a premium to have the option of some secure motorcycle parking.

Leicester used to have some really useful motorcycle bays on Abbey street. They provided you with a chain and a locker for your lid! Didn't look that hard to break into, but the thought was nice.

Just going through Google Maps street view and it looks like they have since replaced the bays with just an anchor.
still better than everywhere I've been in Surrey.
