I've applied to be a https://www.bikechatforums.com/images/smiles/siren.gif.

If anyone has experience in the tesing process can I have as much info as pos. got my first tests on 5th Feb when they weigh me and tell me I am too fat!!!

Apparently it's much easier to get in recently - the fitness test is much simpler. Anyone done it recently?

Also T.C. I'm interested in becoming either a motorcycle bod or armed response dude - not sure which. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

/ me gets out gun.https://www.asdz68.dsl.pipex.com/smile/mgun.gif

From what I’ve heard the tests are easier now. There is a massive recruitment drive in London. Someone from my school who was a drug dealing is now a copper. Laughing

Why do you want to be a copper then? I wouldn't want to do it because I get enough abuse in life without being paid to get it.

I feel like i've sort of 'fudged' my way through life so far. I want a carreer where I can make a difference and get a new challenge everyday. The Police seems to offer that.

I wanted to be a cop from being very young and never had the confidence to apply.

It's a reasonable wage, a good solid carreer choice and it's just something I've always wanted to do deep down inside.

Go for it! Doesn't bother me, what bad can a "proper biker cop" be? Very Happy

I don't know how the test goes, though.

Best of Luck,

Anyway theres nothing wrong with a few friendly bobbies Wink .

Hi
Cool, i will be applying in a few years. I would apply now but from what ive heard is that they want people with "life" experiance, meaning not a 19 year old kid whos been working at sainsburies. What im going to is either be a community officer or security guard, then join. I also would like to be either traffic or Armed police but AFAIk they are hard to get into.

Hi

Good luck getting in.

I suspect they are after people with some experience of life. They are also desperatly in need of people. A neighbour is due to retire from the police in the next few years. He says that they have a serious problem coming on as they had a massive recuitment drive in the late 70's / early 80's and these coppers are all just reaching the point where they can retire. He said that something like 30% of the police are due to retire in the next 5 years.

As to traffic departments, good luck. Many areas seem to be closing them down (Staffordshire has done so), while others are greatly reducing the size of the traffic departments.

All the best

Keith

Well you won't get shot by me, I've been chewing over the idea of applying after I finish this year at Uni. First 2 years you are on probation and are just a beat cop with an experienced trainer with you. They do a programme called HPD which you can apply for, you then spend 2months in each division, from that you can work out what you're best at and enjoy the most to specialise in. And the pay looks pretty damn good, 18K for the first year....

Chunkielad, depending on where you are in the country they will have different targets to meet. The force that I work for have a policy of not generally taking young people on. They prefer older people with some "life expericence" but if you are London way you will find that they will more or less take anyone for consideration and initial vetting. The Met will take anyone as long as they can speak English. (sort of)

checkout policecouldyou.co.uk they have some obs tests on there and more information. In terms of Traffic or ARV you must first complete your training period (2 years) and then apply for jobs as they come up. Traffic and ARV are very popular and have normally have a tenure period of six years. I work in the tech unit which is interesting. You would also need to pass the Police driving and Police Advanced class 1 to join traffic for the response/ pursuit driving, which in itself is a laugh. Another good area is air support and csu.

Go for it..

Pay is near 19K now as you start and goes to over 22k by the end of probation. Didn't know about HPD - that's a great idea!!

I'm looking forward to it now - just hope I pass everything - they are likely to say

"Bog off you are too fat!"

Which force are you in Monkeyboy? I'll be in Greater Manchester Police Force.

The could you site is great but it doesn't give you much of the opinions of real coppers. More of an advert really.

From GMP website:-

What is the starting salary?
The starting salary as of September 2003 is £19,227.
After 31 weeks this increases to £21,462.
After 2 years this increases to £22,707

This will then go up in increments on an annual basis

You can apply for sergeant very quickly too, and then it jumps to 27K I believe. One thing I wouldn't be doing is applying for West Midlands police, I want to live for a bit longer. More likely apply for Hampshire or Sussex Police, both have a lot of vacancies.

You cannot just apply to be a sergent otherwise everyone would! you must complete the exams and then be offered a post in whichever area has the vacancy.

Luke, at 13stone you are a lightweight!! If I was 13 stone, I'd look scrawny, I am a big build. I weigh 16st 10lb at my last weigh in but only about 2 stone of it is fat. I was in pristine health when I stopped playing rugby and I was still 14 stone!!!

I WILL BE LOOKING AT DOING THE SERGEANT EXAM AS SOON AS IS POSSIBLE AS i THINK MOST PEOPLE WILL - LOOK AT THE PAY RISE!!!!!!!!!!

Played professionally for my home town (Leigh) until I got my skull fractured. (20 mins into my first professional game!)

Never mind, a 20 min sports carreer is better than most have had!!!
