Had a go on a mate's ww2 r71 and loved it, (despite the gearbox being a tad er clunky) lol

Moving afew decades on I've seen a few late 70's R80s around for decent prices as fixer uppers.

But having no experience of shaft driven motorbikes or working on anything other than Small engined hondas I'am wary of buying a complete heep, so what normaly goes wrong with these bikes good reputation or not?

There bullet proof, theres even a few R80, 90, R100,s about with over 500,000 miles on them.

simple push-rod 2 valve air cooled boxer engines not much more complicated than a CG125, the only weak points are the gearbox bearings failing but this is still quite rare and only after 100,000 miles on most bikes (gear box is seprate from the engine and easy to swap).

no problems with drive shafts apart from the the later post 1988 models (R100GS etc) which use a dry para-lever shaft that would go out of phase or had the u-joints fail on stock shafts (upgradable) instead of the mono-lever oil bath ones on the older models.

As Rob says , I do indeed have one, i'm off to the south of france on mine tomorrow for 8 days! I can't wait.
Mine is a 1979 R80/7 , which is fitted with a later RS fairing, and has done 36,000 miles.
They are good bikes, they have a very simple 50bhp motor that doesn't really go wrong if looked after and they are good for some seriously high millages.
They will never set any landspeed records, although they will always get you where you want to go at an ok pace, will cruise at 100 all day long with a top speed of around 115. They are very comfy and easily do 200+ miles on a tank full.
something to remember if you are used to a more modern bike, they are a bit on the large/heavy side, the brakes are no where near up to modern standards, they are quiet a mechanically noisy engine, and even a low miles minter will have quiet a bit of valve train noise, you worry when they DON'T this often means the valve seats are reacceding and closing the tappets up.
I run mine with castrol lead additive, a lot of people remove the heads and have them fitted with hardened valve seats allowing them to be run on unleaded.
I'm 18 and insurance is just over £230.
Jamie.

All post 1985 models should have hardened valve seats so you could easy stick a set of later heads on and they offend pop up on ebay
