The ignition barrel on my SV has been a bit temperamental lately. Sometimes the key turns in it frst time. Other times, I can be there for a few minutes jiggling it until if finally clicks into position.

Rather than spend a small fortune on a new barrel set, I was considering installing a remote start immobilizer thingymajig (£20ish from the fleabay).

Has anyone else fitted these devices? How naff are they? How easy are they to fit? Do they work as expected etc? Does the remote start take into account the few seconds it takes for the bike to become ready (mine has about 3 seconds before I can press the starter button - I guess it give the oil pump a chance to spurt a bit or something).

They are notoriously easy to bypass if you know what your doing. You can also clone the remote signal and start the bike without the main remote. Id have a think about whats worth more, saving a few quid on a remote starter and risk the bike getting nicked or buy a new lock for a few quid more?

Unless of course you can find a decent remote start system (Although this will probably cost more then the lock set)

I've got a remote start alarm.

Pointless for me, I leave the bike in gear Laughing But it has worked.
Pretty good, aside from when you lean on the button or rest a book on your keyfob and your bike is running outside.

That and you start it.. with the steering lock on Laughing

Sometimes it's the key that's at fault. Do you have another key you can try in there?

@Marki :Got 2 keys and both do the same thing. I reckon something inside the barrel's worn out.

@Ozzy: I've tried various different methods to get the lock to turn but might not have tried pushing up towards the clocks - will give it a go tomorrow.

@Computid: Unfortunately, it looks like a new lockset would set me back £80-£100+ Having just blown £500 to get the camchains and tensioners replaced I'm unfortunately going to have to go cheap for the next few months Sad

@Paddy: Did you fit it yourself? If so, was it pretty straight forward? I also like the idea of not having a bunch of keys hanging out the barrel (I have a mass of keys that must put some strain on the barrel!)

Piece of cake, If you dont have an alarm, get the Cyclone V2 non talking, has remote start and a very decent alarm.

Comes with instructions for YOUR bike as long as you get from the right ebayer, shows you how to wire everything.

No need to cut wires unless you want the immobiliser/remote starter Thumbs Up

Thanks Paddy - just seen these on eBay - they didn't come up in my original searches as I was looking specifically for 'Remote Start' - so I could have ended up with some crappy Chinese good for nothing lump (just like my last bike!).

Not a bad price either. Will probably end up going for this if I have no luck wiggling the lock up towards the clocks tomorrow
