Sorry guys, boring car thread Smile

Mum is clearly having some kind of late midlife crisis. She needs a new car and has decided she wants a quick(ish) hatch of some description. It needs to be slightly practical as she will occasionally need to carry about some horsey stuff and a good fun as she pretty much tears about like a rally driver. Maximum budget is £3.5k, preferably from a dealer.

She had a 205 before it blew a radiator after a gazillion miles. Shes found a Pug 206 'Gran Tourisme', basically a limited edition GTI with a big bumper on it to homolgate the WRC car. Looks like this:

https://is03.thegumtree.com/image/big/43689795.jpg

Its considerably below her budget and I've been to see it and it is absolutely immaculate, 68k. However, as I'd like to use it occasionally I'd much rather she got a Focus ST170 Laughing She is not keen on this. Any other suggestions or anything that might help win her over into getting the ST170 would be appreciated, though preferably not proper hot hatches as thats just not needed.

Oh and before it is suggested, an E36 M3 is not an option due to parking on our street being pretty much hatchbacks only Crying or Very sad Nothing too hot as I would need to use it occasionally for times when the bike would be impractical and I don't want the insurance to be too silly for the amount of use I'd get out of it.

Cheers

LOL at boy racer mum.

Civic Type R, seemed to be the best hot hatch you could get.

And the above Peugeot looks horrible, i'm sure i read they weren't very good either.

Sorry, I'm confused. You can't have an E36 M3 because only hatch backs park on your street?

ST170 doesn't have very much go by today's standards to be honest. +1 for a CTR, or a CTS if she's not after anything too hardcore. Possibly a nice Integra TypeR?

Of course none of these are as good as the E36 (if you can live with the looks)

Sorry. Parking is extremely tight in our street and a smallish car makes a lot more sense, or at the very least ones without a long bonnet.

The Civic sounds like a good shout. With regard to the ST170 bit, I like Focuses myself because I've driven a few and their good fun. I've done a fair bit of driving in my mate's Leon Cupra - I can't remember if it was an R or not but it had a nice wooshy turbo - and that was either lots of torque steer with the TC off or immensely frustrating with it on. Not bad grip though.

Aa I see. Laughing

For me focus' are a bit too heavy to be proper fun, so they need 200+bhp to make them move at a respectable rate.

Reviews seem mixed. Good fun but badly made seems to be the consensus.

And yes she is a bit, not keen on the Burberry though thankfully.

I owned a 206GTi, really enjoyed it and it was a really fun car to drive.

In addition had a lot of additional gizmo's (all singing all dancing air con, electric sunroof, auto lights, auto windscreen wipers, etc) that were fun to play with but also had the potential to go wrong. Must be 4 or 5 years ago that I had it but I still recognise it as one of the most fun driving cars that I ever owned.

Just so you know, ST170s are wank. Properly wank.

An EP3 (type r) or Leon cupra may sneak into budget, though probably not from a dealer saying that.

You wouldn't get a Cupra for £3,500, even the standard non R models seem to go for about that.

Thinking about it 3.5k might be a bit too low for the Type R, especially from a dealer.

What about an Impreza? Not much bigger then a Hatchback & plenty of power plus 4WD.

I know, i was talking about the R too lol.

What i meant was that the non R models seem to hold their prices very well, i looked the other day & they seem to be about £3.5k, so having a R model sell for the same price looks extremely dodgy.

From what i've read the R model uses the same engine as the Audi S3/TT 225bhp, so getting a good one for £3.5k is pushing it a bit.

What about a Clio 172/182 or Megane 225 Cup it's got a fairly decent boot space for stuff to fit in?

Or stretch the budget and balls to the practicality and get a Clio V6 Laughing

I don't think you'll get a Megane 225 for the budget from a dealer, a 182 is probably the best car dependant on if it's big enough for the horse stuff.

E36 M3 is around 10cm longer than a Focus ST it seems - maybe you should use insurance as an excuse instead Razz.
