After the piston ring did an escape job and tore up the piston and cylinder, I have recently rebuilt the top end of my KDX 125 and got it running again.

It takes a fair bit of kicking to start from cold but once it catches it runs and idles well. However, take it for a ride and the engine is a bit unpredictable.

In 1st and second it doesn't appear to rev out - it quickly gets to a point of stuttering and not revving any further. However, into 3rd it revs more cleanly and for longer.

It isn't keen to hold a set speed, appearing to choke up, meaning I have to constantly change up and down, or keep going on and off the revs when riding.

When I rebuilt the top end the KIPS valves were all free, but I can't verify the operation of the actuator.

I suspect it is running quite rich (from the smell and smoke) but knowing that 2-strokes are fickle when it comes to fuelling, I was after some pointers. I haven't done anything to the carb yet (I was in a hurry to get the bike rebuilt and MoTed). It runs exactly like it did before the rebuild (I hadn't had the bike very long before it spat its piston ring).

I was thinking:
- strip and clean carb
- check basic settings (air screw, float height, needle height etc)
- check jets and needle for wear

Beyond that, any advice? It is running the oil pump mixer which appears to be OK - I haven't tested it but was pleased that when I finally got the top end apart, the small end and various other components were lightly oiled. The original plug was sooty.

Oh, just remembered, first things first, the air filter will get a good clean and oiling (as I said, I was in a hurry!).

would check you have standard jets in there too while you're at it. Check the KDX owners manual.

Is it the standard carb fitted to the bike ?

Is the exhaust standard ?

These things can affect the jetting and need a bit of tinkering to get right
