Hi,

I could do with getting some luggage carrying hardware for my bike, Kawasaki ER-5, but there seems to be many options.

The requirements I have in order are:

Waterproof
Carry shoes and a shirt
Price
Not look crap

Which would you recommend? Tanks bags, panniers, top box?

All you need is a binliner and a bungy chord.

Ha, I also have a rack fitted, so I guess a tail bag would be enough. Can anyone recommend one?

Oxford Sports Panniers are more than adequate..i use the small set for short runs and the larger pair for camping.touring ect..
Get them cheap as chips off Ebay and combine all that with a Renntec rack on the back and the skies the limit. Wink

If you already have a rack, just buy a cheap top box from ebay :S

You can get a 42 or 47 litre for around the 40 - 50 quid mark

That ^^^

The rack is the expensive part, if you already have that then a universal topbox can be had for very little and provides a dry, safe(ish) place to put your stuff.

I didn't know boxes could sit on racks, I thought they were for tail bags only. Do you think hard top boxes are better than the soft tail bags?

The rack is like this:

Ditto with getting a rack off evilbay, I have a Givi rack and panniers but the topbox was only 30ltrs. So after searching for a larger box (I wanted around 40-45ltr) I got the fd moto (45ltr) £44 delivered and took about 10 min's to fit to the Givi rack, the quality isn't quite as good as the Givi but for less than half the price it's bloody great (and came with the back rest). I got the smaller box as I didn't want to be as wide as a van but we did struggle a bit for room plus I'm thinking of putting a rack on the top of the box (for waterproofs) to gain a bit more, just remember to take into account what you might end up carrying Embarassed
Regards john

A top box is infinitely better than soft luggage for permanent fixture. Totally waterproof, surprisingly spacious and pretty secure. They cine with a mounting plate that bolts to the rack, the top box then locks onto that plate. It makes them secure but easy to remove and carry if needs be. Probably a good idea to give the plate a few coats of protective paint before fitting.
