Ive just got a yamaha dt 125 re 2004 and its FULLY derestricted with full DEP and Iv just swapped all the fluids for fresh, cleaned air filter, changed oil, cleaned carb, new spark plug etc etc Don't get me wrong I love my bike, but I'd just love a bit more poke at bottom end lol

Unfortunately Iv run out of things to "improve" it's performance and getting a bigger bike isn't an option. So please don't say "sell it and buy a bigger bike", just curious if theres anything I can do to give it a bit more kick??

Sensible answers would be appreciated, thanks all Wink

it's a 2 stroke, not much you can do to improve low end power. What reeds are you running? Maybe a boost bottle will help with low to midrange.

When you say fully derestricted, do you just mean that the power valve is jammed open, or does it have the control box too?

Why can't you do your test and buy a bigger bike?

No I dont mean a jammed wide open power valve lol Ive completed the dt125.net checklist on derestriction for my model. Thats what everyone seems to point people to when they ask about dt derestriction. Ive done everything I can think of to make it run spot on and still not satisfied. As for reeds have not checked them, why? Can't do my test for a while yet as I have a car aswell and NEED the car for my job, but can't afford to mess about with passing more tests lol The bike is for me and only me to ride, no passengers and Im stuck with it for a while so want to get the most possible out of it.

I have full licence & a DT... no law says you HAVE to trade up to a bigger bike JUST because you have a full licence....
BUT if you DO like the light weight, two stroke franetasism of a DT, but want more, then the best way to get any more is to go orange and get a KTM....
Of course if you ARE riding de-restricted DT on L's illegally..
The REST of us have got with the program and earned the RIGHT to ride bikes with more than 14.5 BHP.... so stop pissing around and prove you deserve it.... THEN buy a KTM!

Oh right!

so you DONT have a licence....

But becouse only YOU are going to ride it illegally that makes it 'Ok', hugh?

Course taking tests costs, a WOPPING £121.50, and two hours of your life.......

That is SO-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-OH much hassle Rolling Eyes

Stop pratting around. Get seriouse, and just bludy do it!

If you dont do tests in the next year and a half or so, you probably wont be able to do them on a 125 anyway, with the 3rd Directive laws coming into force, demanding you use bike of type for licence, ie like DAS rules, you'll have to take tests on school bike, and you'll only get 'half' a licence, by way of permenantly restricted A2 group for the effort.... and have to do it over, again by das rules on another schol bike to get unrestricted A group.... after having held A2 for at least two years.

And ages all change too. 17, you'll only be able to take test for A1 group, RESTRICTED 125 licence. 19 you'll be able to do A2. 21, with two years of A2 completed you'll be able to do full A, and only when you are 24 will you be able to 'jump' the steps and do DAS.

You have bike. If you can afford PETROL for the damn thing, and the time to ride it, you have NO excuse NOT to go for tests!

And right now, you do NOT have the right to be riding that bike on the public highway... go earn it! Its in YOUR interests!

Point well taken mike, I have been thinking about using it off road anyway, as its just a weekend mess about on a sunny sunday. I think I will just use the car as I do most weekends to take the kids out and the bike can be an offroad project until I earn my stripes Wink

Then I think I might sell up and get a beefy KTM, ironically before this dt I had a KTM sx 125 (offroad) hence why Im disappointed with this lol

Unfortunately all the money you (probably) spent on the DEP pipe will have made the power delivery even more peaky.

Not much you can do with most small 2 strokes to give them more bottom end, they are usually tuned to be peaky.

Meh, everyone rides derestricted 125's on a CBT. This site was originally set up to give nsr owners advice on how to do exactly that Laughing

Well, you have the bike, and a 15 month window of opportunity to use it to get your licence before the clamp down..... when getting ANY licence will be a real ordeal.

Your call, but for £121.50 and a couple of hours, it HAS to be wort a shot, doesn't it?

For full licence you need:
CBT Certificate Generally around £75 without bike hire, but variable.
Theory / Hazard Test Certificate £31
Mod 1 £15.50
Mod 2 £75
If you are riding a 125 about on CBT, all the mandatory stuff, to get a full ticket, comes to £121.50.
Lessons, aren't mandatory, depends on how confident you are, you can pass, but point of L-Plates is to let you 'practice' for the test. If you dont think you can pass, practice harder, give it a go or give up!
If you reckon you need training, well, yeah £1000 for a full DAS course is expensive, but not essential. A 'couple' of lessons, may be all you need to check you are doing stuff right, and pick up a few tips to help you pass, one for Mod 1, one for Mod 2
Gnerally around £50 a pop for a two hour lesson, on your own bike. That's £100ish.
Local school to me does full 7 week 14 hour test course for £125, though, so if you shop around you can find decent training that doesn't have to cost the earth.
But, point was, if you can afford to ride a 125 on L's as a 'toy', and can afford the time and running costs, then you can afford to go for your tests.... might not PASS, but you wont pass riding around aimlessly on L's either, will you?

You could drop the gearing a bit, that would lose you a few MPH on the top end, but it would make the bike feel much more peppy.

£121.50 covers Theory, Mod 1, Mod 2. The tests are not hard, and can be passed without any training.

If you think you're good enough to ride a bike over 11kW, then passing the tests shouldn't be any problem.

And there's no point in pleading poverty when you're asking about replacing the forks on your rapscallion bike.

You can use the Athena 170cc kit to get more power everywhere. Its not cheap, but will bring the bike to life.

https://www.adrenalin-pedstop.co.uk/p/Yamaha_DT125_R_RE_X_SM_Derbi_GPR_125_Athena_170cc_cylinder_kit-1250.aspx

Going beyond this will begin to sacrifice reliability, and although the engine will give more power, it will result in a peakier delivery.

Tuners such as Stan Stevens do porting jobs to the cylinder to change the characteristics of the power band - usually coming on higher in the rev range. This is ok for road use, but not necessarily for off-road use as you have suggested.

If you are planning to ride off-road, then change your gearing. You wont need to hit 70mph off road. If you drop the gearing dramatically, you'll have a much more responsive bike for off-road riding.
