Also test to rule out problems with your stator. That's what failed on my 2002 Blade, taking out the reg/rec on the way.
I had the same symptoms you describe, all fine with no lights on. but night riding was out of the question unless it was fairly short distances.
Apparently if you do a lot of slow riding in heavy traffic the heat builds up and breaks down the insulation on the stator causing it to short. Dunno what your 6 is like, but the 954 is an oven of a bike and gets massively hot if speeds are under 30mph.
I looked at replacing mine myself, but was put off by the routing of the cables back to the area under the seat. I'd been there before and lost plenty of skin so I paid to have the local workshop do it. ____________________ 2016 CBF1000F - Commuter heaven | 1994 CBR600FR - Awaiting defibrillation |

THIS seems to be a recurrent theme with hondas! My reg/rec went, then not long after that, I was faced with the same problems. At revs, I couldn't get beyond 12.7V so the battery wasn't charging. I replaced the part with a piece from dave silvers which eventually went pop within a matter of 3 months. Unfortunately, it took the connector block between the reg/rec and genny so the smell of burning plastic under your seat and the acrid musk of burning components caused a bit of panic. I should have checked my generator phase output when I replaced the reg/rec the first time since it turned out that my stator had burnt out!
I had my stator refurbished and rewound by West Country Windings who also supplied me with a reg/rec to go with the refurbed stator.
The problems didn't stop there. 6 months later, my bike came to a complete stop in london traffic as a result of a duff battery. When I did a charging check a week before, it was fine. The battery would read 12.8-13V when revved, and with the lights on, it was 12.7-8V. But it mysteriously left me dead.
There's a long "cool story bro" post I made about the AA coming to my rescue. Having told him the background of my charging system failures and the fact that my battery was dead (some dealer swapped over my 2 year old yuasa with some chinese crap therefore exacerbating my charging issues!), he said this.
"Your reg/rec is some generic piece ... even chinese!?" Did a charging system check on the stator phases and they were reading off-scale when revved. More importantly, the phases were in sync - so from that front, there was NOTHING wrong with the stator windings or internals - westcountrywindings did their job. However, he DID say, that if you were to buy a replacement gen set from electrix, REGISTER YOURESELF AS A BUSINESS USER and you get 50% off! I can't remember how he worded it because I was more focussed with getting my body work back on. He vouched for them as well as west country windings.
So based on my experience, the 3 criteria required are
Good battery - if you're battery is duff and leaves you stranded, do what I did - get the AA called out... if you have recovery and relay, they'll often save themselves the hassle of towing you and much prefer to get you running - new Yuasa battery for £45 sir?
Get a decent reg/rec. Without this, it doesn't matter how good your generator is. If it's chucking out the volts and the reg/rec isn't up to converting that AC into DC, then you're in a bad state.
Generator - just whip open the cover to see if any of the insulation has gone or if there are any typical signs of scorching. If that's the case, then talk to electrix or westcountywindings.
I learnt the hard way - I only covered each element individually which caused me great inconvenience with breakdowns.
AA man also said, where possible, do NOT ride with lights on in town traffic, particularly since CBR6's and blades get up to 105 deg C without much provocation causing the fan to switch on. Fan + lights is a no-no on the OEM honda electrics. It seems to be a common problem and I have been disappointed with how bad honda electrics have been. 4 breakdowns in the last year as a result of charging system issues!
Sorry for the long post. I'd try to not be like teflon-mike! ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

YTX9 Yuasa only costs £40-£45.
The rest of what the AA man said was rubbish.
You didn't cover every element that's why you had problems. Most Honda charging issues are caused by the REG/REG closely followed by the starter relay and on Blades the bridging cable between the Genny and the REG/REC.
Incidently it's generally the REG or regulator side of the REG/REC that goes not the REC or rectification side. |
