Hi guys.

I have experimented a lot with oiling my chain whether it be using a scottoiler, new 10w40 engine oil, the expensive spray cans such as wurth's spray wax and others.

I am looking for the best available budget chainlube option possible. I am talking about engine oil, gear oil etc.

The 10w40 doesn't stay on for long enough so I'm wanting something a bit thicker. I have heard someone mention 80w90 oil but really I'm just asking you guys because you guys know your stuff.

What spec oil do you recommend I go for.

I don't have any issues with oiling my chain in terms of taking the time with engine oil.

I am just looking for something that I can apply similarly to 10w40 but it'll last a bit longer and keep my chain lubed.

Thank you for any help.

Are you putting the oil in the right place. I use engine oil, some Halfords own brand car stuff, just because it's sitting in the garage. I regularly get +40k miles from a good quality chain.

I never clean the chain, just whenever it looks dry I run a little oil on the inside run directly onto the X rings. A small bottle with a pointy nozzle is your friend here. If I'm going out then the ride puts the oil evenly through the chain, if the engine's warm I'll start it and put the bike in gear whilst on the centrestand to let the spinning rear sprocket centrifuge the oil through the chain.

I use 80W90 gear oil. Is slightly thicker than engine oil and does fling still but I could be bullied into saying not as much.

Engine oil will do, gear oil is perhaps slightly better, all of the spray on waxes are an expensive way to ruin a chain whilst the spray on oils are just a way of wasting money, chainsaw oil is considered by some to be better but I have no direct experience.

I use EP90 gear oil and just rub it on with an old rag. Not much fling and seems to stay looking nice and wet for quite a while and I get it free from work Very Happy

lol... I have mean that the lube stays on the chain for ages. It does not dry it up like others do. I noticed after several weeks the lube is still on there...
My chain became messed up when my rear brakes seized last winter. So it's got nothing to do with the lube... Smile
