I got my engine back off Pete. yesterday. The guy's an absolute star!
He's checked the clearances for me;

They are currently:
Inlet:
.004", .003", .003"

Exhaust:
.008", .007"

And they need to be:

Intake:
0.10 ~ 0.15 mm (0.0039 ~ 0.0059 in.)

Exhaust:
0.20 ~ 0.25 mm (0.0079 ~ 0.0098 in.)

So I am assuming they are currently out.
I guess the idea clearance would be 5thou and 8thou. (0.005 and 0.008)

I've never done clearances with shims before. Only ever with tappets and adjusters/lock nuts.

So am I right in thinking, I need to measure my current shims, and go 1thou smaller on one of the inlets, and 2thou smaller on the other two?

As for the exhaust, One seems spot on, and the other will need to be 1thou smaller?

Any help much appreciated.

That seems about right, though you would be leaving some on the lower limits, the bucket and shim valve arrangement on my 7r seem to close up over time, so you might want to give some of those a little more room, save you having to adjust them too soon in the future.

edit: also I think most modern shims are metric and vary in 0.05mm increments

So I'm probably better just going with a metric approach, and setting them to 0.15 and 0.25.

Yes.

+1 them for them closing up over time. The valves tend to hammer themselves into the head.

Us old timers work in thous Very Happy

Ben what you should do is re-check the measurements before pulling the cams (you have to bend your feeler gauges about 15mm from the end to get them in or you get a false reading). Once you have that written down, pull the cams and measure each shim. Now you will know what shims are required and there's a good chance you'll be able to play swapsies with your five you have removed to get some of them in tolerance then just get he shims you need for the others.
