With our domination of the cycling in the Olympics I quite fancied a road/race bike.

I remember my dad had a race bike, I had ago about 10-12 years ago crashed it spectaclarly bent it and myself! It has been in the rafters of the garage since

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/chris-red/869cb7bd.jpg

It was up here wedged between the kiddy bikes, it took about an hour to wiggle it out. It was stuck hard I was perched on top of a ladder with 3 motorbikes below me wiggling this this it was an experience! I was more sweaty than I ever will riding it.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/chris-red/5df970c5.jpg

Here it is in all it's glory the name on the bike is 'Sun Solo' alot of the parts say Rayleigh.

I took all the extras off, as most of them were fucked from the crash, mudgaurds lights etc.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/chris-red/d18cfc1b.jpg

Looks pretty slick!

The plan is new tires and tubes, new cables and a chain.

Any advice? I've never really worked on push bikes. What sizes do I need for tyres and the chain? Any other bits I should change? Brake blocks?

Both wheels are buckled slightly (it was a pretty big crash Laughing ) any guides on how to fix them something to do with loosening/tightening spokes.

Wheels can be straightened, but it might be worth getting some new ones, maybe with some tires already on?

Change the seat, that one looks shit. Soak all the moving bits in diesel for a while then lube them up before use.

All the moving parts seem good, the wheels turn well as does the crank, I'll have it apart to regrease it all anyway, anyone know what tools I need to remove the crank?
I haven't tried moving the seat post yet, that could be interesting!, does anyone have advice for any other special tools I would need?

A local bike shop will true the wheels for £9 each, I might just take it there save me fucking it up.

If the seat's not capable of inserting into your anus at least 3 inches you're not a true cyclist.

Also this bike used to have a pump hanging off the top rail, it was aluminium with a red white and blue plastic band round part of it and it had a little air tube that came out of the handle and screwed onto the valve and pump.

You can still see how it clamped to the bike with the little brackets hanging from the top bar of the frame, they look factory fit anyone have an idea if I can get a replacement or what to look for?

Looks like a Raleigh Falcon Sun Solo.

Think they had Reynolds 531 frames, if so, not to shabby. Thumbs Up

The problem with working on push bikes is you need a lot of specialised tools, each manufacturer uses their own versions, so if your going to try and remove anything like, BB, cassette or so on, your first going to have to find out what company made them. Then what version they are, so that you can buy the correct tool. Wheels will either be 700C or 650C (will say on the side of the tire), you'll probably want to buy 700/600 x 23C tires.

The tires are 27" 1 1/4 this doesn't seem to be too common a size. I'll pop out at the weekend to try to find some.

Gonna get a new seat post and saddle and new brake cables tyres and tubes. The Gear cables seem fine and have a nice smooth action.

Anyone know what type of chain I'll need?

I didn't think it was that old. Shocked

Yea you will have to buy 27" x anything tires, you cant really interchange anything with a 27".

How many gears on the cassette? 7? 8? you will have to buy a chain to match.

The bottom bracket looks like an old Cup and Cone, problem is they normally have a fixed cup and an adjustable cup, the left is normally adjustable and can be removed with a C Spanner and sometimes a pin spanner as well. However the fixed side usually needs some elaborate overpriced tool, these were sold to bike shops forcing people to pay to have the BB removed and installed. There are a few ways to bodge your own tools, there are some guide on the interwebs.

Yea pretty much anything below a 9 speed chain will work on a 5 speed. Get the lowest number you can as it will be stronger and last longer. 6 speed will be fine, 5's can be hard to find.

Is there pitch to worry about or are they all standard?

Pitch should be standard unless its some really obscure drivetrain, all that changes with the different speed chains is the width.

Have been slack updating this, I managed to true the front wheel reasonably wheel however the rear is proving very difficult, thinking of just taking to to a pro.

I have a chain on and gears set up front tyre on too, and a new saddle/seatpost. I have regreased the front wheel bearings and set it right.

I bought this which i think is amazing value. Really steadily built and fast delivery very impressed with it for the money. I would recomend it to anyone even for doing really minor work on a bike it makes it much easier.

All thats left to do is true the rear wheel replace the brake cables and wrap the bars Very Happy

I used this type of removal tool. Can't vouch for the site though.

Me again,

I bought some new brakes for this as suggested by Stinkwheel I bought some double pivot Shimano Sora brakes. However they do not fit. The Rear is about 5-10mm too short on the calliper arms meaning the brakes rub bearly in the rim and on the tyre. The front's bolt that attaches to the frame is tiny, like 20mm whereas the existing brakes have a bolt about 60-70mm long.

Do they still sell modern brakes that are this fittment and what is it, also does anyone want a pair of Shimano Sora brakes Laughing

As for the rest of it I just need to replace all cables and sort the brakes out now. The rear wheel is true (ish) I took it for the maid voyage and snapped a gear cable So I will be replacing the lot.

I was chuffed to bits when I got my first racer for Christmas aged 14. Don't know about the rest of the country, but the fashion round here was to turn the handlebars up the other way.
