Hi,

i have very little experience with 4t bikes and i am currently taking the carbs off my EL 250 to clean them. In doing so ive noticed that they seem to be connected to the cooling system Confused why is this? will coolant start pouring out when i remove the pipes?

Sorry if it seems obvious to those 'in the know' but as i say, im trying to learn a bit more about 4t bikes by rebuilding this one.

Thanks in Advance

Harry.

not 100% but I reckon it will be to warm up the petrol... think |I had a XJ600 where the carbs had oil going through the carbs to warm up the pertrol and air..

If they actually are connected to the cooling system then yes coolant will piss out when you disconnect them, but as carbs are high up an engine not much will come out.
They may be like that as standard or fitted after-market. The purpose is to warm the carbs and prevent carb icing in near freezing conditions

Yes. Just take it off and do what you've got to do. Then when you put it back on top up the coolant and undo any bleed screws you can find. I usually make a point of bleeding at the pump after a short ride too as air often collects there.

Yes, the coolant runs across the back of them to prevent carb icing.

Yes, coolant will piss out when you remove them.

What I do is pinch the tube shut with my fingers a bit back off the carb, pull it off the stub then stick a bolt in the end to plug it up and stop the coolant running out. You'll only loose a few ml of coolant this way.

Hi

To go with the above, Kawasaki had a major issue with reports of carb icing in the late 1980s. Bit of a media storm about people being killed as the bikes died at the wrong moment due to carb icing.

Kawasakis solution was to recall every liquid cooled 4 stroke they had sold in the UK and fit them with new carbs plumbed into the cooling system to stop them freezing in cold damp weather (ie, normal UK winters Laughing ). Did work but god knows how much that cost them.

There will be a filter in the pipes going to the carbs. These need to be cleaned out occasionally.

All the best

Keith

So i removed them and opened the carbs up, and they must have been drained before the bike stood for the best part of two years, as they were almost spotless, so i just blasted the bowls with carb cleaner to get a very small amount of crap out.

The strange thing is, when i removed the said pipes they were dry. not a drop of coolant. There is coolant in the system, could it have flowed back into the expansion tank because of being stored so long?

Thanks

Harry.

Hi

Filters are probably blocked.

All the best
