I've been offered the full buy it now price for a bike I'm selling on the 'Bay. However the buyer is German, and has said he'll arrange pick up and will pay by international money transfer.

The guy seems pretty genuine, and has good feedback.

Is there anything I should be wary of at all, or is this a perfectly normal situation when selling bikes in this fashion?

Help/advice greatly appreciated.

Happens fairly often that buyers come from abroad and import bikes from the UK.

However without cash in hand I wouldn't even consider it as there are FAR too many scams around involving international money transfers.

Cash on collection or buyer can fook off IMO.

Whole minefield when it comes to international buyers on Ebay. Best thing you could do is make sure you get the money before releasing the bike and make sure the guy picking it up has the authorization in writing and you get a copy and signed recipts to show you've sold the bike and the collecter has picked it up on behalf of the buyer.

Then you've documents that cover in event of a scam.

Cash on Collection Thumbs Up

My ZZR went off to Poland, there was a slight hiccough with the original collection but we re-arranged it and it was collected within the week.

He's saying he'll pay full amount to bank a/c which avoids PayPal, but can only collect the bike in four weeks...?

It just makes me a bit nervous, maybe it's unjustified, but can't help thinking I could get ripped off....it's £6k, so quite a lot of cash....which I most certainly cannot afford to loose.

If it's bank transfer, it can not be reversed I think. Don't quote me on it though

Is there anything in his feedback that suggests a big gap of account usage or that he buys bike related stuff?

Its not unusual for scammers to hijack accounts.

Has he suggested a particular type of money transfer? Bank to bank is very common in Germany.

Ask him for his full name and address, and home telephone number, and his place of employment. Check all this out with International directory enquiries, and phone his work to verify. Google all the information he gives you and see what comes up. Also check his address on Google street view and see what his house is like. If he's genuine, he wont mind you being cautious, if he's scamming he'll be evasive.

Bank transfer is the best option.
He'll need your swift or iban number. Don't worry he can't rob you with that number Laughing

Cash only. I sold my Honda S2000 to some German guy a few weeks back. He flew over with the cash, we both went to a Lloyds TSB branch near the airport and cashed the money in. He drove home.

So is he paying four weeks before he collects it? More than enough time to check that it is all ok with the bank.

Just be aware that there used to be a fee for an international bank transfer, something like £25. I'm not sure that it still applies but its worth checking.

It sounds fine to me, bikes are getting expensive in europe compared to UK, you will have the money cleared and still have the bike, so the risk is all his. A new Burgman Exc is 13000Euro's in France.

Perfectly normal. We live in an open market afterall.

No reason to treat it any differently than a UK sale. so just take the usual precautions

It's absolutely fine done it twice. Tell him that you'll remove the listing when he does the transfer. If he gets iffy which is fair enough (thats a lot of money to send to a stranger), tell him he can put a deposit for half, the other half on collection or something like that.

You will need photocopies for both the parties, so passports and some documents with both your addresses, plus for safety measure a written contract, saying "...I so and so from so and so address on this date blah blah sold to...blah blah..", both parties date and sign and get a copy each.

You give him all the V5 documents for export, he will need this to register the bike in Germany or wherever, I think you may only keep a little slice I don't remember which bit it is.

Please note: The VIN on the papers must match the VIN on the bike for him to be able to register it in the EU, otherwise you've fucked him big time.

Then once the bike is sold you just get in touch with the DVLA, tell them the bike went abroad to so and so at so and so address sold on so and so date and thats the end and you get a confirmation letter from the DVLA some weeks later.

In both instances the buyer came to buy off me (and once I waited 2 months agreed), so I don't know how it works if you're selling and a courier picks it up or something.

Some great tips here chaps, thanks. I've spoken to him already, seems ok and all above board. He's having a 'think' about it, which is fair enough.

Once again - thanks!

its funny how paranoid the brits can be giving out there bank accounts, here in nz thats the only way we pay people for products bought on auction sites,
its probably more, that its only an over night thing here where it takes a week in the uk,

anything is better than letting those dodgy paypal bastards get some free money for doing jack all,

once the money is in your acc its not coming back out,

Worked for a bank; It can be recalled even quite a long time after the transaction, and it happens quite alot! Do not consider a transfer any more secure than card or paypal!

I agree with most other people in this thread. Cash in hand ftw.

I think its because they judge others by their own standards. They are a dodgy race at the best of times. Wink

Bank transfers in the UK are mostly instant even between different banks, this changed about 2 or 3 years ago.

Would really love to know where you get this information, first time I've ever heard of such a thing, sounds like bullshit to me.

Just how without going to court or starting some proceedings can you recall something you sent abroad with SWIFT or wire transfer? Never heard of a bank that would attempt such a thing and I've lived on the continent for a good 5 years on and off.

Just how is one bank going to demand money of another bank on the word of one of its account holders? Transactions would simply not happen on the continent due to everyone recalling months on. It's not like a papyal "dispute".

Hence I call bullshit on this one.

That's what I believe too. No funds=no transfer for one. Only for fraud prevention can they be returned.
