I have just passed my CBT and was wondering how many penalty points I have to play with on my provisional license? Obviously I dont plan on accuring any but its always good to know.

I know that once you have passed your test, you have 6 points for the first two years but a friend of mine said that you get 12 points on a provisional license - is this true?

Yes you have 12 points on a provisional, reduced to 6 for 2 years if you get a full license. Only happens once as well, i.e., you won't have to do another 2 years on 6 points if you pass your car test a year after your bike test.

Probably for the best if you aim to accumulate zero!

For a provisional the 12 point rule applies. However, if you are thinking of gaining a full licence you'll do well to make sure you try not to gain any points at all, because the 6 point rule is that if you gain any points after your first FULL licence that make the total 6 or more - you have to re-take your test. That includes points you gaine on your provisional.

Basically, if you get 3 points or more as a provisional, after you have passed your test then for the first 2 years you must not pick up a fixed penalty (or worse) or you'll be punted back to learner status.

I dont intend on picking up any points.

What happens if you were to gain 6 points on your provisional license and then you sat your test. You would pass your test with 6 points on your license?

How long do the points stay active on your license for? Is it two years?

If you pick up 6 or more point on your provisional licence, and sat your test...
the points are carried over to your full licence, and contrary to the urban myth, you do not automatically loose the full licence...
Although any more points, and kiss it godbye.
Points stays on your licence for 3 years but you can apply to have them removed after 4 years!

Thanks for the reply Smile

What about if you got 9 points on your provisionally? This is purely hypothetical, of course.

Excuse my ignorance but if they only stay on your license for 3 years, why do you have to apply to have them removed :-s Also, when you say that they only stay on your license for 3 years, is that 3 years from the date you got them or the date that you pass your full test?

Hi

The slight difference between the 6 point limit and the 12 point limit is that getting points that put you to 6 or more points within the first 2 years of getting your first full licence results in your full licence being revoked. You do not get a ban, and can drive / ride again as a learner almost immediatly.

Exceeding 12 points results in a ban.

You still are fine, and pass your test and you are fine. But a single point extra would get your full licence revoked

They are valid for 3 years but stay on your licence for 4 years. The date they are valid from is when you get them (which for most offences is the date of the offence).

All the best

Keith

Points stay on your licence for 4 years, but only count towards totting-up for the first three.

If you had 6 or 9 points, then passed your test, you must not get another single point for the two years afterwards or you'll have to do your test again.

Ok the points stay on your licence for 3 years starting from the date of offence... or court ruling!
You have to apply to have them removed after 4 years... i don't really know whats that all about, sorry...
and for the biggie... 9 points on provisional... i am guessing the same applies, i.e. you will still have your full licence, or they may have any restriction put in place... just guessing
