I've decided I'm getting a SRAD and I'm going to pick if up Tuesday it's done 12000 miles 98 plate great condition and 12mths MOT.

The bike is not taxed, I need to ride this bike back from the place I'm getting it from which is an hour ride from my house but I'll need to tax the bike before I ride it home.

Can I tax the bike on my iPhone through DVLA?

It was taxed but as the insurance has run out from the person selling the bike it also Sorned the bike and refunded the person selling the bike new laws I suppose!.

You will need to be insured to tax it and for your insurers to have updated the database. Also if you tax it while it is in the previous owners name it will be delivered to their address so you will have to arrange for them to post it on to you if it doesn't get posted on time for you to pick the bike up.

No idea about iphone apps tho

Just hope you don't get a jobsworth copper on the way home!

Assuming you do manage to get tax, the offence is failure to 'display' a disk, so even if you're taxed online you can still get into bother.

Some insurers will let you print a cover note from their website, in this case I would go striaght to post office with the cover note and the green slip from the V5 and buy a tax disk there and then.

Yeah I suppose that's a option, I wouldn't need a cover note. If they did pull me over they would give me a producer I think and as for not displaying a tax disc I don't think the offence is a high penalty i could be wrong though!.

£30-60 fine for not displaying a tax disc I hear!.

Under those circumstances providing you had all your paperwork with you and weren't stroppy I don't think plod would give you a hard time, at worst a producer which is no big deal, you just get the tax disk and 'produce' it at your local nick in five days.

Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 section 33.

On summary conviction, it's a "level 1" fine, currently up to £200. Since it's a strict liability criminal offence, this is one of the times when you'd likely be better off paying up whatever bribe Fixed Penalty Plod ask for in order to make the problem disappear.

Whilst that is the offence, when you tax a vehicle online you are able to print off a piece of paper that can be shown to a police officer and means you cannot be prosecuted for failure to display.

That's what the DVLA bloke on the phone told us, we never got stopped anyway.

If the DVLA told me that bikes have two wheels, I'd count them to be sure.

I think what they mean is that it's very unlikely that you'll be prosecuted. But a print-off is not a VED license, and it's the kind of strict liability offence that target chasing coppers and CPS mongs drool over.

All that said, I wouldn't sweat it, but be informed by the statute.

From S33 1(b) you'll also note that the offence won't apply from 5 days after making an application for a tax disc (excluding weekends & bank holidays). As you'll be taking it straight off SORN, you won't have any issues with the fact it was untaxed prior.

So if you tax the bike online, save/print the confirmation and you can't be done for failure to display for the next 5 working days.
