Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 section 33.
On summary conviction, it's a "level 1" fine, currently up to £200. Since it's a strict liability criminal offence, this is one of the times when you'd likely be better off paying up whatever bribe Fixed Penalty Plod ask for in order to make the problem disappear. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Assuming you do manage to get tax, the offence is failure to 'display' a disk, so even if you're taxed online you can still get into bother.
Some insurers will let you print a cover note from their website, in this case I would go striaght to post office with the cover note and the green slip from the V5 and buy a tax disk there and then. |
Whilst that is the offence, when you tax a vehicle online you are able to print off a piece of paper that can be shown to a police officer and means you cannot be prosecuted for failure to display.
That's what the DVLA bloke on the phone told us, we never got stopped anyway. ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

If the DVLA told me that bikes have two wheels, I'd count them to be sure.
I think what they mean is that it's very unlikely that you'll be prosecuted. But a print-off is not a VED license, and it's the kind of strict liability offence that target chasing coppers and CPS mongs drool over.
All that said, I wouldn't sweat it, but be informed by the statute. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
