He didnt give you enough time. How long were you actually on the bike for? because by the time the instructor had done his speach about safety and shown the bike you wouldnt have had much time in the private ground to actually ride the bike.

Sounds to me like the instructor just wanted to get the day over and done with and thats not good. He should have kept you going until you had the basics sorted out and then taken you out after lunch for the 2 hour road riding.

When I took my CBT (January) I hadn't ridden before and there were two other lads on scooters, who just shot through it all. I was struggling to turn and go slow and all sorts, there was a lot to think about. The instructor tried explaining to me what I needed to do, and then kinda got slightly irritated when I wasn't doing what he was telling me to do (even though I was trying really hard to make sense of it in my head). Eventually I just told him to stick his advice because it wasn't working.

The other two lads went out with him for the road-stuff and I stayed behind with another guy who taught me better, and within half a hour we, too were out on the road. I over shot a few times and had to go back for a hour for more road experience, but other than that I got it.

It could be the guy teaching and your learning style aren't meshing, or maybe you just need a slower pace. Still, they know you're new to it, and will take time to learn, so don't give up hope yet. Go back tomorrow, give it your best and if not, then try again. Don't let the CBT stand in your way!

Good Luck Thumbs Up

That instructor sounds entirely unreasonable. Chin up, rise above his petty taunts or impatience and hop straight back in the saddle as soon as you can Smile

I'd never ridden before either, so to keep myself more under control I just kept thinking GENTLY GENTLY GENTLY - every time I went near the throttle or clutch. Worked for me.

Good luck! Smile

20 minutes is nothing. Should be at least an hour off road in the practice area.

Print this page out and give it to him tomorrow if you get any hassle.

Quote:
Element C - practical on-site riding

In this element you'll begin riding a motorcycle. By the time you have finished this element you'll have developed enough basic skills to allow you to ride a motorcycle under control.
You’ll learn the essential techniques including:

rear observation
the 'observation - signal - manoeuvre' (OSM) routine
the 'position - speed - look' (PSL) routine

You will then practise these practical skills until your trainer is happy that you'll be safe when you are taken out onto the road.

Overall, the element will cover:
riding in a straight line and stopping
riding slowly
using the brakes
changing gear
riding a figure of eight
emergency stop
rear observation
turning left and right
u-turns

Taken from here

He should have kept you there until you had the hang of it or they ran out of time for the day. Not taken the other bloke out because he could ride and you were still figuring it out.

Any hassle tomorrow then report the school.

just keep at it i did my cbt last saturday and was very surprised to be doing figure of eights as the first excercise.

i would have thought it would be better to do some starts and stops first in a straight line to get used to the bike,

but saying that my instructors were top notch gave us as much time as we needed i still need a good deal of practice on the slow control stuff before i go in for my mod1 but its just about practice, practice, practice.

like others have said change schools we had a male and a female instructor try find one with a female instructor i found mine was alot more patient than the guy on the offroad stuff and the guy was better on the road stuff.

Don't be too discouraged. My CBT experience was awful. It was my first time using a vehicle of any kind. I had to stop after two hours because I crashed into a fence (at all of 5mph) and hurt my hand. This is because I didn't understand the clutch/throttle relationship. I went back after a week or so and had a different instructor. Like you, there was another person taking the CBT who was much better than me.

Gears and the clutch were never properly explained to me. I barely made it through my on-road part (constantly stalling, instructor screaming in the radio at me the whole time) and he only let me pass because he never wanted to see my again.

I didn't let it deter me and I did a lot of practice on my own bike and figured it all out very quickly.

I'm starting a three day DAS course tomorrow and I put a lot of research into it this time, compared to the CBT : https://www.circuitbasedtraining.co.uk/das_courses.asp

Just keep going and don't let your confidence get knocked too much!

if i was you id ask for my money back and find another school for your cbt, that isnt an attitude an instructor should have, if he has little patience he's in the wrong job.
he clearly couldnt be bothered and i wouldnt be wasting my time or giving my hard earned cash to a prick like that.

Hi Emma, that sounds terrible what happened to you today, I was the same as you a few years ago, never been on a bike. Fortunately my instructor was sound and he had about 4 together, the ones that got it straight away were told to go do slow controls while he spent time with me and another girl that were novices.
Jeez I fell off once and it took me a while to get to grips with it. The other girl fell off loads and went home crying.

Don't let this put you off, you go show em tomorrow.
It will take time and it's a very draining day.

Good luck and if this happens again complain, it's what they are there to do Thumbs Up

So you started at 9.30 and he was sending you away by 11.30?

That's awful, if he's doing things properly, you should only just have been getting on the bikes by that point. Takes a good 90 minutes to cover all the classroom based stuff properly, then showing you round the bikes and pushing the bikes around and putting them on and off the stand etc.

How quickly the other guy picked it up is bloody irrelevant! I know it took me longer than 20 minutes to get the hang of it, shit I still probably couldnt do that figure of 8 now on a strange bike within 20 mins Laughing

Two options really, keep your calm walk in head held high and get on with it or tell them to shove it and try for a refund. Either way these particular idiots should be named and shamed as I (and hopefuly many other members) wouldnt like to send someone we care for to a place thats going to be as short with them and send them home crying.

Hey Emma,

Sorry to hear about your bad experience, the CBT is meant to be fun whilst you are learning and when things like this happen it just makes it a chore.

What I can recommend to you is that when you return today, demand a different instructor, that instructor sounds completely unreasonable and it sounds like he just wants your money without having to actually bother teaching you.

If they don't let you go to another instructor, let them know you feel you have not received the service you paid for (CBT Training + Certificate) and that you will be reporting that instructor to the DSA for unreasonable conduct.

Either way you will get your CBT Certificate or a refund, which you can then use to find a different school.

However, it'd be better to just change instructors to a nicer one!

I really hope you get your CBT Certificate and enjoy the rest of the experience as you should.

Cheers! Thumbs Up!

It's a bit wierd that the other guy that picked it up quick got all the attention Confused

When I did mine about a month ago, I was that guy - but the instructor spent no time with me at all - just set me off doing laps of the car park, then pulled me in and showed me gear changes and set me off again. Laughing

He spent more time with the other guys that were not quite getting it - which, to be fair, is what you'd expect.

Where abouts are you Em? It might help people suggest decent schools.

Same. I had been riding for a year or 2 back in Belfast where there is no CBT but had to do the thing over here for my DAS course. The instructor pointed out my bad habits: "If you dont keep that bloody foot on that bloody rear brake I'm going to bloody nail it there!" Laughing

But spent more time with the other guys. There were 4 of us and I went out with one more guy who was on a ped on the road with the instructor. The other 2 stayed behind with the other instructor for a little longer to get the hang of gears a little more. But I did spend a lot of the practical riding following the procedures once or twice and then watching while the others had the extra tuition they needed.

The instructor sounds like a bellend.

When I did my CBT I was comfortable straight away on the bike, whereas the other lad my instructor was coaching was novice to say the least, so he got most of the attention. My instructor kept us both off road until the other lad was safe enough to go out, which meant that we were the last group out onto the road. Once out there the other lad really struggled with his low speed control, so again, he got a lot of attention and we stayed out until the instructor was happy to sign his certificate. We were supposed to finish around 4pm... We rolled back in at 6:45pm. The instructor actually apologised to me for keeping me out so long as I'd completed the course to a satisfactory standard by about 3pm. I just said not to worry, the extra time was well spent honing my new skills.

Point is, a good instructor will go at the slowest persons pace. Buzzbee, your instructor was not a good one!

My instructor was a top bloke! Andy from Ride4Life in York (not sure if he's still there mind, he had a "T" plate cbr600f and very long straight hair). Not only was he an excellent instructor, he was a really nice guy too with a cracking sense of humour.

Just remember Buzzbee, you're paying them for a service, make sure you get it! It's not the customers who need the businesses, it's the businesses that need us. If you still get a raw deal today, get your refund, find a new school with decent instructors and name & shame the bastards who gave you such crap service!

Oh and good luck today dude!
