hi guys and girls.

basically the miss's has a citroen xsara picasso thats annoying me.
its a y-reg 1.6 petrol
from the start it was just the fan not kicking as it had seized up. so i replaced that and then all was ok

then a couple of month later i started getting the dash flashing saying engine temperature hot, switch off engine. again the fan not kicking in but the fan is ok.
no damage has been done to engine as its always been allowd to cool down.

now the engine temperature light comes on straight away when switching the engine on when cold.
i was told the temp switch are common on these so i have replaced that and the thermo switch which are both on the thermostate housing but still no luck.

so basically is there anyone with knowlodge of these and can point me in right direction or it looks like il have to call out a autoelectrician

cheers and any help is very much apprecited

basically the light thats coming on is the temperature is shooting up into the red (digital dash) and the warning saying "engine temperature, switch of engine"

i dont think it would be the stat as its when its cold so the stat will be closed anyways. iv checked the fuses and all look ok
Sad

I would think it has to be a sensor OR broken wire maybe, does the car have a low coolant switch too (in the expansion bottle usually) it may be that playing up.
I would check everything to do with the temp gauge (does it shoot up even with ign on and cold engine or just when its running?)
could be a dash fault too I guess

im also heading towards the broken wire idea but my soddin multimeter has decided to stop working. there dont seem to be a low coolant switch that i can see.
it only does it when i start the engine from cold (left for 24hours). 1 seconds its showing cold them its straight on red

It's not uncommon for a fault of this nature on this particular car to be down to corroded pins on the ecu as it controls the entire cooling/temperature/fan system. The solution if this is the case is to buy a remanufactured ecu.

Try the simple things first though but just remember it could be the ecu that is failing.

yeah looks like im gona have to get it plugged in and then will have to look into the ecu, best bet will probably be getting it repaired if possible.

do you know if i unplug the ecu to check the pins condition, will it loose the code for the key? or are they hardwired into the ecu or something?

Should be fine pulling it out, usually hard coded anyway.

Just check for any corrosion, if possible.. you could clean it up!
