Hi again i have the chance of buying a DT 125 but the thing that is putting me off is that it has not been used for 3 years!.
The bike according to the owner starts and runs but surely sitting in a garage for 3 years would not have done any good?
Sould i steer clear?.

Go look at the bike, try a short test ride (if he allows you) if it works okay possibly buy it if your convinced its in full working order, service it to check it all over. If its all clear MOT, Tax, off you go Very Happy

Sitting in a garage for 3 years wont have done much harm.
Piston rings might have gummed into the p[istons, through corrosion, especially if its been sat with the piston at bottom dead centre & the exhaust port open... and they normally do.... and the primary seals, unwashed by petroil may have gone hard.... but otherwise BETTER sat in some-ones garage than moldering in thier garden, worse being hammered around the streets, worse STILL fields!

DT's are hooligan bikes... I would be more concerned about the following, in rough order of priority:

1/ is it nicked
2/ is it NICKED!
3/ HAS it been nicked!
4/ Has someone TRIED to nick it?
5/ Does seller have the log book? Does it match the bike?! Am I SURE it matches the bike, frame and engine numbers, colour etc.

If that lot checks out, THEN I might start worrying about:

1/ Theft Damage / attempted theft Damage
2/ Crash Damage
3/ Kiddie-Go-Kwickly, numptyness attempting to 'De-Restrict' or PLEASE NO! 'Tune Up' the engine..... badly done 'mods' to try and make them go faster are probably the worst thing these bikes suffer after thefts and crashes! Also what often results in them being dumped in the back of a garage for umpety years in a fit of pique when they go slower, or go faster, briefly, then go bang! You have been warned!
4/ Kiddie Condition 'Mechanics', stuff being 'fixed' with squeezie gloop, cable ties and gaffer tape, rather than new parts.... chains having links hammered out of them rather than being replaced.... and stuff like that.... another hint.... two strokes need top end rebuilds periodically, with new piston rings, and possibly a rebore and new piston, depending on wear.... lacking such, they loose power, owners open them up, get it wrong, and bung them in the back of garages!
5/ General wear, tear, and condition.....

NOW we are ready to talk turkey, and IF the bike has 'Checked out', and the list of crimes inflicted by previouse owner ent too bad... can talk price.

Remember comment about gummed rings, AND two strokes needing periodic top end rebuilds..... if you are buying one..... you PLAN on doing a top end rebuild, as soon as you have it home ANYWAY... DT shouldn't be more than about £150 tops, and that's if it needs rebore and new piston and new rings..... if it dont, then you might get away with just £50 for gasket set and new rings, and are laughing.....

Bike in back of garage, owners not that enthusiastic about it..... you have three chances, either he ent that interested and has not thrashed or messed with it, possibly just ridden it a bit, not been comfy on in, left it in the back of garage 'forgotten' and you can pick up a useful little bike, that for luttle money and a little work, proves a REAL bargain..... or... you have a bike that has dissolusioned owner, to point of dispair, having been thrashed to within an inch of destruction, chuicked in the back of garage in disgust, and then tinkered with... enough to get it running and punt on to som eother poor sod, for as MUCH money as they can milk from it, and end up paying way over the odds for a hunk of junk......... OR... its hotter than Hadees, when the air-con's broke... hidden in the back of a garage long enough for the insurance co to pay out on who ever it got nicked from, and find a suitable identity, to 'ring it' on, either a log book from a scapped bike, or simply applying for th elog book from one sat on some-one elses drive!

So there IS stuff to be worried about, it being sat in a garage... but mechanical degradation from non use, is the LEAST of them!
