Firstly, this is not a sales pitch. I'm looking for some genuine advice as I seem to have come to a dead end.

What am I doing wrong?

I put my gsx up for sale 20 days ago on ebay and had a lot of people watching but no takers.

I listed it at £1600 (probably well ott but you have to start somewhere), I then dropped it to £1400, then £1200, now it's at £999 and there are a LOT more watchers but still nobody has rung about it, well apart from a guy who was going to break it and offered me £500..... cash! like that's going to make a difference. How else was he going to pay for it? sexual favors? Laughing

Mot is out in august and although I'm sure it will go through I have simply lost interest in it. It's been sitting in the back of the garage for a month now as the Thunderace is back on the road and most of my spare time and money is being spent on my landy, partly why I need the gsx gone.

Do you think it would be worth breaking it instead and selling it in parts? It seems a shame as it's in pretty fine condition but I have to face reality here.

I'm not polling it as I would like to hear your opinions if you have any.

ok, thats good advice. I put a new Marshall deeptone on it about a month ago. I thought that may make back £200 fairly quickly. It's not the money so much as the time.
I always thought there was a fair market for early 80's bike bits?
I'm probably wrong Laughing and you should know as you break bikes all the time so here's some Karma

If this is the bike I was looking at in a thread a while back, surely it's too good to break?

Although it might take a while, I would keep plugging away at ebay, but drop your reserve; I reckon it might just make £1000, but a reserve nearer £600 might get it moving.

In your opinion, I apologise if I'm taking the mick.

What would be the first bits to go and approx what would I see back from them?

I have space, plenty of it, so thats not a issue.

If I could see a 'fairly quick' 500 back I don't mind sitting it out for the rest.

There is no reserve. It's on the classified listing at 999 with a best offer.

Yes, it was a red one, did you have a problem with a footrest hanger, or is my memory playing tricks?

It's the classified listing that's putting people off; as I said, it probably is worth a grand to the right person, maybe more, but starting at that is too much.

OK, you might end up giving it away for £650, but there's as good a chance that it will fly, if you get a bidding war going.

Ebay does keep asking me if I want to change it to auction format (for a fee, of course...)
Perhaps it's time to take notice then.

I'd wouldn't bid it up for you if you went down those lines Wink

Got to bold as a whole, too nice to rip apart. Someone who likes bikes will buy it

I'm not really keen on ripping it apart I must admit but the money could be better spent and I'm more than a little disheartened by the fact it's hardly tickled anyones fancy.

It's one of those bikes that appeals to a certain person; someone about my age (mid 40s) who remembers them when they were new and might be looking at a return to biking, in fact, its exactly the sort of bike I would've bought a few years ago.

It's not a collectors item, but it's old enough to be interesting, you just have to find the person for it.

The beauty of ebay is, if it doesn't sell first time, you can usually relist it free, so have a go for a couple of weeks, then give it a rest and try again later.

It would be a crime to break it though.

If I was watching it and it started at £1600, then you dropped it to £1400, then £999, I'd be waiting for the next drop in price.

The problem here is that you listed it far to high in the first place. Plus auction formats get a much better coverage, and appeal to people's "I want it now" instincts. I tend to just skip classified ads unless its something I really want, but I've never ever bought a bike from an ebay classified ad. I have however bought most bikes via auction formats.

List it starting at £1000 on a ten day auction starting on a Thursday. Don't set a reserve. It'll sell.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
