Name the song

I think it is called something like Messa Doma.

It is a very old Italian (I think) song, that was played at my grans funeral last week.

It has one main guy singing, and is quite operatic.

Karma for anyone who can find it.

Warped, my guess is you're too young to remember the 1990 World Cup. You couldn't escape the song, it was everywhere. Probably the biggest boost to opera mass acceptance and popularity in donkey's years.

That sounds similar, but not quite it.

Well considering my gran was 77, and never really followed football. Laughing

When I was listening to it in the crem, for some reason it reminded me of ww2, with people bustling about in a busy town centre.

Nessun Dorma is not a football song you mong, read his post properly, it was used in the 1990 world cup, not created for it Rolling Eyes

Yes, but thoughtcontrol was not suggesting his gran like it because she heard it during the 1990 world cup. It was a peice of information that highlighted the fact it is a well known song amongst non-opera listeners for that reason and he would know it if he's seen the 1990 world cup, which he didn't.

English translation of Nessun Dorma:

Nobody shall sleep!...
Nobody shall sleep!
Even you, o Princess,
in your cold room,
watch the stars,
that tremble with love and with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
my name no one shall know...
No!...No!...
On your mouth I will tell it when the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!...
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

There's a second verse about Gazza and a box of Kleenex but I can't find it on google.
