Not sometimes, pretty much constantly, something many people seem to forget, we may be top of the food chain, but we were the last to be evolved.

Probably worth noting that these recent volcano eruptions have released more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than humans have created since before the Industrial Revolution.

Quote:
Lightning takes on a range of colors, depending on conditions in the clouds and in the air.

Blue lightning within a cloud indicates the presence of hail.

Red lightning within a cloud indicates the presence of rain.

Yellow or orange lightning occurs when there is a large concentration of dust in the air.

White lightning is a sign of low humidity (amount of moisture in the air). White is the color of lightning that most often ignites forest fires.

Googled the answer. Thumbs Up

Looks more like ash than rain. It could be the lightning burning the ash and the red is the burning. Lightning is extremely hot, I believe thunder is the sound of the air burning or something.

Cool pics though.

Lightning storms occur when hot air rises fast to meet cold air. An eruption of ash is nothing more than a cloud of hot gassy air and particles of ash rushing into freezing cold air above it. A hotter dustier version of the natural thunderstorm creation method.

The lightning is probably the red/orange colour because of the high levels of dust in the air.

Is ash similar to dust though?

Cant see why it wont be. If you look at the fine particles that settle its like a dust cloud.

Interesting info Thumbs Up

All I have to add is that I like the sound of thunder Laughing When I went to Turkey we were on the top floor of the hotel which was 'open' and there was a short thunder storm which was mental! nothing like what we have in the UK

I would imagine the coloured lightning is to do with the chemicals in the air igniting when the arc passes through them, so if there is high concentrations of sulphur in an area with a lightning arc then you would get a yellow strike.

I did wonder about the quantities of Co2 released from the Icelandic and Chilean volcanoes, has to be massive in comparison to what industry releases, it can only be a very, very rough guess though as there is just no way to measure it. Surprised our government hasn't threatend to pour concrete plugs into all the volcanoes to stop the carbon release.
