A few NSR Q's

I just started working on my nsr125f this weekend; first job the shock. Anyway after a few stubborn bolts the rear frame and the shock were off. However on fitting the one that G gave me; it doesn't bloody fit! it's a completely different size and I can't transplant any of the other parts to the old shock because the bushes are too big

Anyway while the bike is in little bits is there anything else I could do that would be worthwhile as I don't want to be taking it apart again?

Oh when I find a shock to fit it will I need to put any grease etc on the bolts or anything?

I also witnessed what happens to a bike without a shock and taking it off of the centre stand wouldn't have damaged anything would it?
