My 1987 MT-500 would not start this morning, I did the starting procedure just like the seller showed me, A couple of kicks to pull some fuel through the carb, choke, mover her up to the TDC mark on the valve lifter and kick with 1/8 throttle and a big kick.
I did this about six times and nothing at all happend.
Then I remembered that the MT-500 being a state of the art bit of kit needs a key putting in a switch and turning on. Never had a bike with an on switch before!

It's alright. I heard they fitted that in an attempt to stop them throwing cambelts (it has valves in the top of the cylinder head, yet no pushrods Shocked, like some sort of black magic).

Leaving the key in the 'off' position prevents wear of the top pulley.

It has a special button that turns all the lights out including the brake lights. It is in case the Russians invade and try to follow me in the dark, I can not think of a practical use for it unless of course we do get occupied.

1931 Sq4 was OHC, chain driven rather than belt though.

I have decided to paint it as it is white. I am going to both keep in the spirit of the army and make it chav proof by doing a sort of camo job on it. A base of pink and baby blue with flowers and butterflies all over it

All the Big singles were the same, had a few with de-compression levers to make it easier and to stop you from breaking your ankle if the fecker kicked back.

That is quite simple compared to the 1930 500cc.
Select second gear on the hand change, flood carb, 3/4 advance on the mag, clutch in, run like fuck, drop clutch and open throttle. It should go Bang! Bang! Bang! at this point jump onto saddle (avoiding hitting the rear brake with boot) and head off into the sunset.

My Honda TLR 200 has this thing that when you kick the bike over it opens a decompressor, now then one day it was broke and i didant know, nearly got chucked over the f*** ing bars. Laughing

On the old bikes the compression lever is on the bars, some of the very old bikes (pre 1920s) have a half compression lever on the engine that you kick in once she has started (actualy Panther (P&M) used a variation of this untill 1973 when they went tits up). The half compression is what your TLR had but on an automated principle.

At 200cc and low compression it will not need one, in fact I disconnected the decomp on my 350 and the one on the 500 is seized so I never use it. I am building a 500 HS Scrambler with a 10-1 piston and that needs a decompresser.
My knees and hip are bolloxed btw Mr. Green

Yeah, but an OHC is a 'performance' part and only for use on racers. The British public don't want bikes like that. Stick with pushrods, that's the way, it's traditional.. Guys? Err, guys? Why are you all riding Japanese motorbikes?

I have bad memorys of big singles. When i was about 14 i had some old trials bike (a Bultaco 350 i think), it had...err...character i think the word is.

With a kickstart on the left hand side, me only weighing about 8 stone and a hell of a kickback when it fired just getting it started was an experience. I've still got an 8" scar on my right leg from where it skewered me with a particularly vicious backfire.

They use quads in Afghan, not sure about bikes these days.

AFAIK they use them as 'runners'? like when radio communication goes down, or if they arent allowed to send radio messages. *shrugs*

doesnt the army have diesel bikes too?

You're probably right there palmer (re: runners), but I would've thought that the IED threat these days makes tootling out on a bike a suicide mission Thumbs Down Sad

I think the diesel bike thing was an idea, probably so they could use the same fuel as all the other vehicles. The bike would be pretty crap though. Don't know whether it was followed through on or not.

looking through several army careers leaflets/brochures, there is always a pic of an army motorbike being ridden across baron land. From what I gather, the guy riding the motorbike may be the army postman.

sweet memories of trying and failing to kick start my uncles ccm600 off road only toy,, never mind break my ankle, it brough my leg up so fast I knee'd my chest and winded my self Crying or Very sad

Got daddy to start it, rode it across field then gave it back as I was scared Shocked

...got back on ym pw50 and carried on tootling, strange feeling of comfort is gained from being a few inches from the floor.. not sure why
