Caught the end of the 'Sprint Cup' which was...boring but I noticed Montoya was there and Kimi Raikkonen has also gone there and is doing too bad apparently. What I want to know is why is NASCAR so popular? all they do is go round and round, literally! Laughing

Do you think it will make it's way over here like when they have some of the NFL games?

It's pretty dull, but has it's moments. There's a lot of money in it over there though.

No it won't work over here. That was originally why Rockingham was built, and you can see how well that went. They hosted a bit of ASCAR, and a couple of cart races. That was it.

It's all in the marketing. NASCAR is big business and makes hugely obscene amounts of money for it's top stars and teams. The yanks love anything with a big f**koff V8 motor in it and when they crash it's usually a biggie, especially at the longer tracks, Daytona and Talladega. Ad space on the TV broadcasts are second only to the Superbowl in terms of costs to get your company on there and the fans tend to be loyal to their favourite brands, Drivers etc. Most events are usually sold out weeks in advance, but the current recession has seen attendances drop the last couple of years, but NASCAR is in no danger of going bust anytime soon. Fan access to the pits, the teams, the drivers etc is second to none and the organisers of each race weekend do everything possible to make the fan experience the best it can be. Over the last 25 years it has set the bar for motor sports promotion as any driver can win, the cars are all the same spec, it's down to skill and teamwork to get into victory lane and at times there's a huge element of luck too.

Only the yanks could make turning left the worlds most watched motor sport. lol

The crowd can see the whole track from where they're sat. That has huge appeal over places like silverstone where you have to pick a single corner to sit at. Watching a race weekend at silverstone you might not see a single overtake depending on which corner you sit at, but in NASCAR you see all of the action everywhere. So while ovals are dull as fuck, there's a strategy element and the crowd can get close to all of the action (concrete walls rather than half mile gravel traps).

NASCAR is dull as fuck, but then I'd say the same of rugby or cricket. But if you're into it you see all the angles and find it more interesting.
