Nah they just need personality....... oh wait........ Nigel Mansell and Ryan Giggs have both won it. Seems you dont even need a personality!

Hmm. I reckon he'll grab a race at the Southern 100/Ulster GP.

EDIT - Did Ryan Giggs in 2009?

Would do but saw him at the TT and when all the others were doing the signing bit in the pits he just went out on his push bike, a lot of people, some with their kids, had been waiting for quite a while and were very pissed off, all the others like Mc Pint, Johnson, Rutter, Donald ect signed everthing that was put in front of them even hutchingson done his bit, bad show I thought.

I was surprised that the IOM TT crowd were giving Martin more encouragement than say McGuinness.

'Aye...Never missed a beat...That's Reet that is Chief..i love wagons...don't want a fuss...Dainese? Sure i'll pimp for ya..TT3D? put me down for half a dozen Chief....'

Really? Neutral I like the guy he is a good character and a good rider and a fellow yellow belly, but he is a petulant brat sometimes too.

Like in the film when he got the penalty for speeding in the pit lane. As a top flight racer he knew the rules, broke them had a moan, which is fair enough but then carried on moaning about it in a very un sportsmanly way.

And this year with the Red Flag thing, yes that was bang out of order, and worth making a fuss of, but the way he shot off to the camera and fucked off half way through the podium ceremony I thought was pretty pathetic for a professional top flight racer.

It's all good when he is going well, but not when it goes bad. Not exactly a very "sportsman" attitude personally.

I think thats because Guy has had a lot more media coverage than Mc Pint and the crowd think they know him better, Mc Pint has a much better personallity though.

I like him. He's like a kid in a sweetie shop full of E numbers and caffiene. Reminds me of me when I was a kid. Feed him sweeties and watch him bounce off the walls.

Decent bike rider too.

I totally agree, but will he ever win a big TT before he has a major spill? can't make up my mind on that one.

after watching the film, I'd say he's definitely a personality, whatever you think of his ability or professionalism, but motorbikes are a fringe sport, and road races (or whatever the correct name is) are at the fringes with track racing being more mainstream

more chance of rooney being votes sports personality, simply because more people have heard of him

Maybe head over to the IOMTT forum and read the "Disappointed by Martin" thread in which Guys friend (or partner) gives an insight to what the TT weeks are like for Martin

Read that and agree. The thread in question is here with the reply mentioned above is on page 3.

This time a few years ago the only people who knew who Guy Martin was were the regular IOMTT and NW200 race fans. All of a sudden he has a major crash in the IOM and was the first to fall and survive at that corner. Just so happened they were making a Documentary of the race year that year and all of a sudden Guy is mainstream celebrity status with everyone and his dog suddenly knowing who he is and wanting a peice of him. Chances are the poor bugger hasnt a clue how to handle it so reverts into himself. I know I'd become all shy and withdrawn and want to hide if all of a sudden people were screaming for me.

From that thread:

Quote:
Just to paint the picture, I was with Guy every minute of the day for the last few weeks apart from when he was actually riding the bike. Its been pretty awful. In the pits he has to p*ss into a bottle in the kit room because he can't even go to the toilet, when waiting on the road 3 minutes to the start of a race people are shoving posters under his nose or actually coming and sitting next to him (without asking) to get their mate to take their picture. Just before Senior race, becuase he was getting absolutely hounded Philip Neill brought over an unbrella for us to be able to sit against the wall, hide under the unbrella and get 2 mins peace before the race and a woman crawled along the floor with a mug asking him to sign it. When he said 'after the race' she got really arsey! And its not just at the race. People shout stupid things on the street, jump out infront of the van when you're driving, stand in your way when you're trying to pushbike up to the pits on a morning, people were ringing the work number off the side of his van trying to find out where he was staying in the iom. We stayed in a lockup in an industrial estate to get some peace and 4 guys on bikes followed me home one night. We had to leave the presentation after the Senior because he was getting hounded, and even then people followed us back to the van and we couldn't get out of the carpark. I was almost in tears that night, it was 10pm, and i hadn't even had a chance to give him a hug and say well done after what had been a very emotional day, so we got in the back of the van, had a hug, when a bloke opened the back door and asked him to sign stuff with at least 20 people in tow!! We haven't been able to go out all TT because even when you're having your breakfast the hassle is non stop. The list could go on and on and on and on.

See, that is exactly why I have no desire to be famous, ever. Obsessive fans sound fucking nuts!

Sports personality of the year? I was thinking no originally, then had a think about it and maybe he could be a major contender. Im thinking in terms of what he has done for the sport of motorcycle racing.

As said above, only the IOMTT, NW200 fans and PB readers knew him a few years ago, now since his TV show and TT film, every man and his dog know him which is great.

Ive had friends who are totally not into bikes ask me about him, what he races in etc etc.

Would be a massive boost to the sport and biking in general imo if he won it.

Wasnt James Toseland nominated for it a few years ago?

I know it can't be easy for him with all the people wanting him to sign things but some of the others get it just the same but they deal with it better thats all. Yes his crash in 2010 was a major one, thats what i mean, can he win a big one without the spill?

Guy will win a TT. He is the fastest man never to have won it and if it wasn't for the bike breaking down in the first race would of had a full house of podiums.

Regarding the other riders dealing with it better than him, well there is no way they have as much hype and hysteria surrounding them in the way that Guy does, largely due to the film and BBC series making him a house hold name even to non bikers

Seems like a decent bloke. Not sure about Sports Personality of the Year though.

I reckon the BBC has 'found' the new Fred Dibnah! Regional accent an' all!

I have followed him in print for a few years.
And like him a lot ... in print.

But 'in person' he is like my funny mate Confused Pete ... great guy... really over the top .. and very funny .. for the first 3 times you meet him.
Then he starts to get annoying .... then you just want to never see him again.

Since his TV and film fame... I am now sick and tired of hearing him say "by eck chief" .... and that squeaky laugh.
I think if me and Guy are going to continue to be besty mates... then I only want to actually see him about once every 3 months.

No one could have had more people round him than Joey Dunlop and he was quite a shy bloke who didn't want the spotlight but he managed it ok, so did David Jefferies and Rossi copes ok. All I'm saying he doesn't shy away from the cameras or microphones but he does with his supporters, you very rarely get one without the other! I really hope he does win a lot of TT's but something tells me he won't.
