Hi guys,

Pretty strange what I noticed this afternoon, it seems that the rear wheel rim of my Transalp has got like 4 cracks where the spoke joins the rim.

Any idea about what this could be and whether or not it's dangerous to carry on riding like this? and if I should put some kind of product so it doesn't get worse?

your wheel is so dirty it's hard tell, but it looks like the paint/powdercoat is just flaking off. give it a proper scrub and see what lies beneath Thumbs Up

transalp africatwins etc all suffer with bad alloy rims they rot from the inside out i i were you ide get the tyre off sharp and see how bad it is on the inside if not to bad the a wire brush and paint will hold it at bay for a while , but since its showing on the outside you may already be to late and may need new rims

I just talked to my mechanic today and he said the same about these honda bikes having this problem... what he didn't do though is to take the tyre off to see how bad was inside bt he said that whilst I look for a new rim it should be fine to keep riding it, as in, that it wouldn't collapse.

Do you think that can be dangerous?

Mine were a lot worse than that for many years and it had no problem passing the MOT year after year. Just check the spoke tension regularly to see if any are loosening. The real answer is a new rim made from proper metal and not the crapolium alloy that Honda use.

Ah really? that was kind of what concerned me the most. MOT is due next month and I was thinking the guys are going to fail it :S

According to my mechanic Honda's charging £300+VAT just for the rim so not quite worth it for a bike this old.

Out of curiosity, my MOT is currently valid until 24th July I think, and it says that I can go as soon as 24th June to preserve the anniversary. Do you know if I can still use it for the following month (until 24th July) if it fails due to this or other thing? (I might give it a go and if it fails I'd prefer to try and sell it somehow)

an mot fail is an mot fail so if you take it early and it fails its exactly the same as if you take it next month and it fails you cannot use it other then to and from the test station even taking it to a garage for repairs is a grey area.

Cheers guys!

Are you sure about that? I thought that the reason for being allowed to take the bike in early for an MOT was so that there would be time to effect repairs before the current certificate expires.

I've asked my MOT station about this several times and the answer is always the same; the fail registers on the MOT database and, by extension, on ANPR.

Should you be unlucky enough to get stopped, you could argue that you possess a valid MOT, but then you just get nicked for knowingly using an unroadworthy vehicle and they are at liberty to inspect your vehicle, then give you points for any faults that carry a penalty.
