So, my lady friends '94 GS125 is being a bit of a cow at the moment. She was going home one evening, and only got to the end of the road when the bike died and refused to start; just lots of afterfiring. Got a new plug the next day, popped that in and it started fine. But later on in the day when starting the bike again, it died as soon as it was put in gear. (Bare in mind this bike has no clutch or sidestand switch). Started it up again and it went into gear ok, but died as soon as she tried to pull away. Bit of other history on the bike, the battery is generally kept on an optimate as it's a bit weak. The bike hasn't been at home for a few days (flat tyre, so stuck at the fathers house), so no optimate. Seems to crank over with plenty of power though, and ticks over ok. Revs in neutral fine too.

It has rather badly worn cam followers and cams. At some point on a long ride, the top end didn't get enough oil and it picked up on the cam lobes. Ticks alot now! It has a new pair of followers and a camshaft to go in. Thinking it might be a clutch issue, seeing as it idles and revs ok. But the clutch seems to be adjusted properly. Would it be reasonable to think that the spark might be breaking down under load, when pulling away?

I can't do or check anything for a while, as th bike is 90 miles away from me, and the otherhalf is going to be out of the country, so I'm not going to be near the bike for a few weeks! Any ideas I can pass onto the step father to investigate though.

Cheers guys!

Hey i hav just got a gx125, a similar bike to gs made for the jap market and iv been let down twice by the eng8ne. Yesterday as i came to the lights at the end of the ringroad it died evn, down to zero revs even whenthe clutch applied, and today the same thing as i pulled up outside a house. It seems like the clutch slips or it could be a problem with the carb but i am going to see how it is later today, it could be a human error e.g me pulling on clutch too late but its dobtful. Can i ask, do you get any problems starting up straight after its died, my gx seems to not want to turn over and loses battery power and needs a minute?

FWIW. My boys GS is kickstart only. The battery is pretty knackered but it starts and runs just fine. As long as the generator is sticking out enough power then it shouldn't have a problem with a dodgy battery.
