G'morning gentleman (and ladies),

Had the MOT on my CBR done last week (2001 CBR600f (the FI model)) and all was plain sailing except for an advisory for slight play in a rear suspension bush.

I didn't notice the orange slip until I got home so didn't question the guy at the time but I think I have found what the tester was talking about; if I pull/push my rear shock from the side there is about 1mm of play each way.

The movement occurs where the shock plate mounts onto the swingarm, there is a needle bearing in the swingarm where it mounts.

Rear shock fiche

Swingarm fiche

My question is,in order to remove the play is this going to require new needle bearings in swingarm shock mount or does the mounting bolt need to be tightened up/adjusted. If anyone else has a CBR with similar style rear shock would they mind grabbing the shock iteself and giving it a gentle tug back and forth to see if theirs moves too?

If I need to replace that needle bearing is it worth changing the rest at the same time or will a nice regreasing suffice? If anyone else has a CBR with the same rear shock setup do you have any play in the shock when giving it a gentle tug back and forth from the side?

Thanks in advance guys Thumbs Up .

and that folks is how a question should be asked in the workshop section., Thumbs Up

there shouldnt be any back and forth play
you'll have to replace the offending bearing, and or the bush that runs inside the bearing,

reguarding the other bearings, if there is no play then just a clean up and re-grease is all that you'll need to do, tose bearing will last longer that the ones bolted to the shock,

I know on the RSVs that Aprilia specifically put play into the rear suspension because all the frames differed slightly from mould-to-mould, which often causes grief come MOT time as some testers advise/fail on perfectly normal bearings.

It may be worth undoing the triangle bracket and dogbone and inspecting each bearing individually. Pop the bush out and see if the needles are covered in shit and/or look worn. Then try twisting the bush inside the bearings to see how much play each one has. If they all feel as though they have the same amount of play then it might just be how they are.

That said, those bearings look cheap as chips. Shouldn't be too much effort to take the swingarm out and get a bike shop to put new ones in.

Interesting, cheers guys.

I will take the linkage apart and have a look n see. If I replace any then I'll be sure to see if the others/the bushes need replacing too.

Do you need a special tool or bearing puller to remove/insert needle bearings or is it something that can be done using drifts and hammers? The Honda workshop manual suggests a tool but i haven't had a chance to check the Haynes yet.

the right size socket is the norm for a drift for needle bearings,
but you can knock it through with just a regular drift
