I woke up this morning to find the Honda CB i bought 5 weeks ago has been stolen. Parts of the lock are smashed all over the street but none of my neighbours heard a thing. When i called the cops they just took my statement over the phone and said there was no reason for them to attend the scene but they will put in on there watch list. So no doubt the bike will never been seen again. Sorry for the rant but I'm still pissed off and have spent all day having people tell me "Your just not meant to have a bike" The annoying thing is i'm starting to think they are right.

Was it chained to anything?

Also, name and shame the lock manufacturers for the benefit of your bi-wheeled brethren!

Edit: Don't stop riding because of a someone else's condom failure.

Sorry to hear that mate. Gotta chain them down to something these days. Can't be "naming and shaming" the chain manufacturer either when you have no idea how they got through....maybe it took them an 30 minutes or so with a set of bolt croppers or maybe they used a grinder, who knows! Smile

Yeah i had a bike stolen in 2009. I live in Glasgow and the bike turned up in Edinburgh a week later. I doubt i'll be lucky enough to have this one found.

It's probably not even worth claiming the insurance.

Well there is bits of the lock all over the place so it look like it took a pounding before it gave up.

Sorry to hear that. As oft repeated, if they want it, they'll have it.

Sounds like you're just feeding the pikeys neds. Any chance that you can move?

Unlucky mate, any chain under 16mm will be cut with croppers in under 30 secs. most locks can be picked in under a minute for everything else there is hydraulic cutters and jacks. And if all else fails a bloody big hammer and chisel.
All you can do is slow them down or make them pick an easier target.

+1 Thumbs Up
Doesnt matter how much security you have, if they want it badly enough they will take it.
I know its not in the same category, but a mate of mine had an Escort Cosworth, it was stored in his garage over winter, garage was alarmed to the house, car was cat1 alarmed and tracker fitted, no wheels, on axle stands and chained to the floor - they took that one night and it was never seen again Shocked
Having said that, i hope it turns up soon enough and in one piece, fingers crossed Thumbs Up

thats where most nicked bikes end up, might be worth taking a drive/or get someone to drive you over to edinburgh, have a wee nosey round the back of some flats (if your brave enough Wink ) unlikely to find anything but id give it a go.
mate of mine does contract work for the council, sees loads of stripped bikes round the back of the flats there Shocked
and as above give us the reg number and get some pics up, i cover a lot of areas in my work il keep my eyes open.

I hate the way people say "if they want it they'll have it" as if it means there's no point in putting any security on it.

They smashed the chain because the chain was too thin. Surely the obvious conclusion is to use a thicker chain, rather than saying "ah well if they want it they'll have it".

I felt the same way when I first got told that. But there are videos all over the place that show even the best chains are breakable in under a minute. All they do, is act like a deterrent. Anyone with the correct equipment can come take it, it's a fact of biking, unfortunately.

Got a link? If you're talking about the Almax video, it shows that shit chains are breakable in under a minute.

It was said in sympathy, so as not to come across as judgemental or critical of the chap who just lost his bike. Your inference is entirely your choice.

Why are you wittering on about chains, by the way? They smashed the lock.

Since it wasn't chained to anything, White Van Ned would have had it away anyway.

Fair point, but re. chain/lock, if you buy a big one of one, you buy a big one of the other.

Yes they could have used a van, but did they have one? Did they turn up with a van, 3 guys, and portable angle grinders? Or was it just a couple of scrotes with a hammer? What's more likely?

Anyway, it wan't just you who said it, in every thread like this it gets repeated 3-4 times like some holy mantra, or an echo.

They could only smash the lock if the chain was left lying on the ground, always wrap as much chain as you can around the bike then have the padlock well above the ground.

Exactly. Any fucking place on the face of this planet, where bikes can not be left by their owners for more than 5 minutes without them being stolen, need to get fucking NUKED FROM ORBIT. That makes most of the surface of Terra, I suppose. Embarassed

So the bike was found!!

Got a card through the door asking me to stop in at the police station. When i get there the police women who was very nice tells me the bike was found this morning but its complicate. So i was thinking it had been involved in a crime so something but it was nothing as interesting as that. She tells me the police have been unable to recover it. The reason why is to get to the bike you have to go through a graveyard until you get to a dirt track, follow that till you reach a cycle path. A quarter mile along the path the bike was through some trees stuck in a small mound of dirt. the police said the bike was completely unmovable and the recovery team couldn't get anywhere near it. So i should try to get it myself. The police woman then draw me a map and sent me off.

Two hours later the bike in home and safe.

Damage to it isnt too bad but they have done quite a number on the ignition. There is a dark red stain on the exhaust which I'm not sure if its blood of not.

When i was at the police station i found out that another bike around the corner from me was stolen the same night.

Can anyone tell me what kinda lock i should get?

Squire 65CS. I don't know how good your chain is but I'd use an Almax Series III as it's claimed uncroppable by hand.

I'd use some form of alarm, even a £25 Cyclone will do. It can immobilise, but primarily it will warn you so you can come out screaming with the iron bar or meat cleaver of your choice.

Personally, if you live it a shit area, my no.1 preference would be to get the bike off the street. If it's there, it's too much temptation for knobheads. If they don't or can't take it, they can kick it over or otherwise trash or torch it.

get a heavy duty chain with a heavy duty padlock think almax are hard to break, key is though to wrap it round something ie lamppost/fence etc, if that cant be done then as said above wrap as much of it round the bike itself making sure the padlock is nowhere near the ground. i do that plus i got one of those cheap alarmed disc locks from ebay, does the job alarm is pretty loud, doesnt take much to set it off Wink

hmm looking from the past threads with most bikes going missing, seems like it is a lot of the time just youths out to no good. May be best just to check if you ever have it nicked or anyone else for that matter to check local flats area, or local park/woods because of the following reason.
I've read that alot of bikes are normally found there guess it makes sense just because they go there so the cops don't catch them and they can have some fun. Always worth a check after you ring the cop shop just on the off chance.
Anyway nice to hear you found your bike Thumbs Up .
