Ive got a couple of questuons regarding excess and general insurance.

Im currently with MCE, last year paid about 380 for my mille R, 4 years no claims, garaged etc in a good area for about 3k miles a year. I cant quite remember the excess but im guessing it wasnt good.

Renewal came through today at £320 from MCE, went on bikeinsurer.tv and got that down to £262 (with MCE FFS) but its £500 compulsary and £200 voluntary. Im 30 this year for christs sake, and they want 700 excess on me for any kind of claim! Is this normal or am I looking at the cheap quotes and not thinking of the slightly more expensive ones? To be fair they were all pretty high though!

At the same time, and I dont mean to take the piss for the younger riders - Ive been there and paid over the odds for insurance and I understand that £260 isnt a huge amount of cash, does that sound fair for a 30 year old on a sportsbike thats no faster than a 600 and only worth 4k on a good day? Confused

Fully comp, TPO was £98 lol.

£900 to make a claim sounds like 'do it right or don't bother'!

Granted an italian bike could easily rack that up, the original exhaust cans are worth more than that iirc. Still totally enragin that you can insire your bike as an old bastard and be bummed if, heaven forbid, you actually need to use it. Essentially if I was to stack it in a single vehicle accidnet I wouldnt get £3k if I was lucky after they had got their cut of excess.

I know they are twats and shouldnt be suprised but sometimes it still gets to me!

Last time I went 3rd party I got hit by a car and then screwed over, it ook 4 years to sort out and I had a smashed bike in the mean time.

I'm on the brink of packing it in to be honest but don't tell anyone. I could afford to lose the cost of the bike but I'd rather have it in my pocket. At the same time my interest in biking has went down everytime Ive got a more expensive bike Confused All down to one daft experience where I got fucked!

Try go compare and make sure you stick your voluntary excess at £0

Also I had a £800 excess quoted, but they rang me up and got it down to £400 and took money off the quote so sometimes its often worth ringing.

£400 is about right but I wouldn't be prepared for much more if you were going fully comp. Destroys the object of it really.

500 Excess for fully comp seems pretty common these days - especially AXA policies.

Could try Carol Nash - they are giving away their excess protection insurance until the end of this month, so you wouldn't have to pay any if you needed to claim, and they might match those mongs at MCE if you ring them up.

Why not go TPFT? I don't think that I've ever gone fully comp in over 30 years. I may consider it with a new vehicle maybe but never felt the need and indeed have never needed fully comp.

I agree with this. If you drop it, well that's your own silly fault, be more careful next time. If you crash and it's not your fault, then you don't have to worry about about the excess.

The only time to worry about the excess is if it's stolen Sad

I was the same as this until a mate had a non-fault accident and then had to spend months trying to get the other party's insurer to settle so he could afford to repair the bike.

Fully comp: notify your own insurer, get bike repaired, leave your insurer to sort.

This. A workmate took out excess protection, paid £30 for the excess insurance (think of it as just adding £30 to the price of the policy in return for £0 excess), and clawed back hundreds of £££ of excess after he dropped his Blandit on both sides and claimed on his fully comp policy that apparently covered Acts of Idiocy. Rolling Eyes

If Carole Nash's policy is like his, then the excess will be deducted from the payout and you'll have to make a separate claim against the excess insurance to get it, so you'll be out of pocket for a bit longer. Still might be a decent deal though.

My insurer has never sorted out any of my claims. I always use external agencies such as Angel Assistance or Help Hire, and then I do a lot of hassling myself. It's never taken longer than 1 month to get the sum back for my vehicle and never more that 12months for personal injury claims.

It's all about how active you are.

I got that with my insurance, it seemed like a no brainer to me £30 or £500.

Also with my insurance the compusary excess was calculated based on engine size, I'm not sure what they bands are of the top of my head i'd have to look at the documents

It's an interesting point really, do you go for the cheaper premium but risk being bitten if you crash? Or pay a higher premium for the benefit of a lower excess which you may never need? I tend to strike a balance between them and go for something in the middle somewhere.

Insurance is like a lottery, and like the National Lottery, you never win! Laughing

Rang MCE today, usualy bullshit on the phone...

'Do you have your renewal?'

'Yeah I do'

'Are you happy with it?'

At this point I think I am supposed to say 'yes please, and by the way thankyou for giving me the opportunity to let you plunder me without so much as a kiss'

Instead I said no, so she took some details, removed breakdown cover and it went UP!!!! From £307 to £330. I told her that was no good and I'd got a better quote on thebikeinsurer and it was woth bloody MCE FFS. So best quote I got was £262 which I have yet to accept. I asked if the policy was cheaper because of the high excess and she went quiet before saying 'erm.... theres not really much difference'

Scumbags the lot of them, the renewal shouldnt be some kind of opening gambit. She even tried the 'whats the best quote you have' trick, I told her none of her business, tell me what YOUR best quote is and I'll let you know if you are near lol Laughing
