I don't really know why I like c90's so much. Got this one yesterday, it's been off the road since 1989 and seems pretty solid. It's a c50lac so it's a 50cc auto, with a parking brake on the left hand switchgear, perfect to use as a clutch lever if you fit a manual engine.

It's also 12v, but keeps the old looks of the round headlight. Anyway, pics.

Looks ok - until you start looking closely. I do have the handlebars and side panels, just not fitted.

So, on with the strip down. There have been a lot of stuck nuts and bolts, I think it was stored in a damp shed.

When I went to take off the exhaust, this happened:

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/47AD4E5A-9A81-4D48-94BC-380EC5FFF2AC-10776-00000B35A482AD67_zpsa37af0ff.jpg

Then I got all carried away and this happened.

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/EC26FCF0-B8F3-4C3B-BF2A-AC8764CC1D74-10776-00000B35B4A13120_zps7465d37c.jpg

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/5394CA2C-5C1B-405B-B6BB-082A31A87DDB-10776-00000B35CE2F8815_zps238b5f10.jpg

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/7F364FBE-AB2E-4AF1-97C1-581203289692-10776-00000B35F60D63D3_zps8e805c9a.jpg

Nuts and bolts ready to be plated - zinc?

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/EE5735AD-CF02-4580-A205-12139AFA2440-10776-00000B35EF216E64_zps061dae92.jpg

The wheels met the angle grinder.

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/90A7D435-D9FD-4D9C-BB51-0FD31A11F47C-10776-00000B35D61FE9BD_zpsf45352b3.jpg

Skanky hubs

And that's it. It's almost ready to go to the powder coaters for a change of colour.

Also, here's the new engine. I changed the clutch case for a SS50 style one because it clears the standard footpegs and doesn't look wank.

Thumbs Up

Shame it's not a Yamaha/ Suzuki two stroke C90 project for a variation on the theme.

Do people actually bother with these, or is there something vastly superior about the Honda version that makes a lot more sense for a resto?

I had a Yamaha V80 as a field bike when I was younger. I seem to remember it went quite well, for what it was.

Got a quote for zinc plating the nuts and bolts of about £30, so I'll drop them off this week.

Then it's just the powdercoating, which is looking quite expensive. I'm going for dark grey in a matt finish for the frame, forks, swingarm and handlebars, with gloss black hubs, brake plates and rims.

Found a little bit of rot where the rear section joins, so I'm going to weld up the seam and flatten it out again after.

Was supposed to be going for coating tomorrow, but this will set that back a bit. Sad

All welded up. It's not perfect but that's the nature of thin double skinned rusted metal. I've ground a groove into the weld to replicate the seam.

Frame went in for coating Tuesday. Should hopefully have it back in a week or so.

Meanwhile, I've been buying.

And my bolts are all done from the platers, so I'll get them at lunch.

Shiny.

Most have come out well, there are a couple that are a bit dodgy, to be expected when they were really shabby before.

Exhaust time!
https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/13851114-BCFB-42D3-85A0-B23D776D88F8-23841-00001A78267EB139_zps3a73cc0a.jpg

Had some spare black heat wrap, so I've covered the header. Undecided if I'll keep it, but it passed the time on Sunday.

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/73EFF8D2-3AA9-499F-B63D-F56961DFA754-23841-00001A783022B1E2_zps2e2506f8.jpg

I also attempted to get the old seat cover off and failed, need to drill out the bolts that hold the strap down.

Shiny things.

Paint is a little darker than I was expecting, but looks pretty nice all the same.

I had a bit of a mare of a time with the plastics. I tried some vinyl paint, but it just came off in sheets. Very frustrating, didn't notice until I nipped up the bolts under the handlebars, then it all bubbled up. It would be the headstock arrangement, which is my least favourite part of the build!

Anyway. Seat cover off, seat base covered in Hammerite.

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/1BE0E16A-E951-42EE-BE03-BDF6EC31EBD1-6783-00000881DBFDD9AC_zps5dd79a30.jpg

New seat cover on. Not best pleased with this, might re-do it at a later date. Atleast the base is now good.

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/A93CCDFD-7D4A-47CA-B103-D596C805D993-6783-00000881E43E93B5_zpsdc14f4be.jpg

Rear shocks painted. Not a bad colour match considering it's from a rattle can:

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/F1A715BB-F08D-4C30-AA4D-DDEF6C3EEAEE-6783-00000881EC527500_zps80bc4c7f.jpg

Now it's wheel building time.

https://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y459/nark_square/2C632CAD-5269-4B20-83E8-744015EF0D9E-6783-00000881F2B7E6F6_zps7d1b529a.jpg

Unfortunately, the beefier pattern spoke set does not fit. The nipples are too big for the rims, I thought at first the coating was stopping them, but it isn't. I ran a file down one to check, but I'm not ruining the coating by doing that to all of them. I'll use standard thinner spokes (like the front).

I've also ordered stickers.

I reckon total spend for this one will be about £700, roughly. This one is a keeper though, I'll carry on using the Chinese one until it blows up or falls to pieces. This is the tarty one. Laughing

Keep in mind I already had the engine and exhaust to go into it. There's another ~£250 if I didn't.

Need to true it up and tighten the spokes properly, but it looks pretty.

Got my rack through from the US of A, and fitted my handlebars and clutch. Clutch is light as a feather despite the slightly tired cable.

My David Silver package should be here today so will get a pic when it arrives. Also both wheels are now spoked, will tighten and true up then can get it rolling!

It would appear that I've just bought a c50LAC off of eBay for £200. Only been here for less than a day and already in pieces.

Laughing

Not sure whether to clean up and run or try and restore?
