I've started recently using 90w gear oil (The bike manual actually recommends it and it works out cheap). Doesn't fling as much as the 10w40 engine oil that I was using previously, but aside from that, 10w40 was just fine.

Oil.

Engine (used or new - any thickness you can get), gearbox or chainsaw oil.

Thicker is better as it doesn't fling off as bad but any will be fine.

As above, oil is fine.

Currently I'm using some Holt's chain lube stuff I got from Halfords. Seems like alright stuff.

I also use engine oil.

I used to use EP90 gearbox oil when it was handy but I don't have a bike that uses it any more so I use old sump oil I've drained from the bike at an oil change.

Or you can get chain lube in an aerosol that's very good, comes out with a sticky foam, stays on the chain very well.

This. I need to oil my new chain.

I dont like aerosols. It stays on and collects dirt, and needs too much cleaning. Im not going to use it on new bike.

Im going to give the chain a first coating of used oil later, and every journey until i get a proper automatic thingy sorted.

I think the general idea is that some is better than none and a clean chain with fresh oil is better than riding with old crunchy stuff rolling about - essentially like grinding paste after a while.

I have been using a mix of gear oil and waxoyl. the idea being that the waxoyl would have white spirit in it that'd help let the oil creep into the chain but would then evaporate to leave it there and the gear oil would help with the "extreme pressures".

whatever you decide, be wary of flinging too much lubricant onto rear wheels
