How long after a 20 mile ride should an engine stay hot? I've been home over 2 hours and the engine casing is still very warm. The radiator and exhaust are stone cold though.

How much oil should the dipstick be showing on a 'cold' engine? Mine's showing just above minimum, but spin the engine for a minute and it's showing plenty.

Still trying to find the fuel tap and the engine coolant level window and I'm buggered if I can get the radiator cap off...[/img]

Completely normal. Look in your manual (or online) and find the correct procedure to check the oil. Mine for example - Run bike for 3mins, turn off and leave to stand for 3 mins then check through oil sight glass with bike level on level surface - should display between low and full, more towards full.

This.

The casings stay hotter for longer simply because there's a load more metal in there. Whereas the exhaust is just a pipe of metal.

If you run it for a couple of minutes then shit it off I guarentee the exhaust will be too hot to touch, but the casing will just be "warm". The exhaust heats and cools much more quickly and there's less material there and it's got the 800 c exhaust gases surging through it.

And so continues the voyage of discovery. Coolant level was low, so I've topped that up. Son in law said i should stand the bike up before checking the dipstick. Guess what? Oil level normal! Woohoo!

Fork seals are definitely leaking though, well, the right one at least, but that should be sorted tomorrow. still not sure about the floaty/notchy brakes, they definitely feel bumpy under compression. Maybe it is the discs. Ham, '05 Hornet, any ideas?
