GPZ Downpipes

These don't appear to have a link pipe between them? Is the link a necessary thing?

As far as i know, no it is not essential to the operation of the engine, it allows any pressure differences to balance, some honda 750f have a balance pipe others don't.
But looking at this set

- it looks like what you are looking at is only half the downpipe assembly
