Clutch Woes.

Hi guys.

I have removed my clutch plates to inspect them due to it slipping when taking pillion passengers. I found that there is only one clutch plate that is badly worn, and it is only badly worn on the one side. It is the plate at the very back (the last one you remove) and it is the friction surface that contacts the clutch hub. I am concerned about the condition of the clutch plate mainly cos im para my clutch hub is a goner.

Here are some photos of the clutch hub mating surface and also of the friction pad in question. I have put one of the other friction pads in a photo to show the difference.

The bike is a ZZR600E with 30,000 miles on the clock.

What do you guys think?

Is it a case of me needing a new clutch hub?

I thought you were going to ask..'Can I just replace the worn plate'..
Looking at the first picture of the clutch basket ,top left,i was worried that there was a casting fracture,hope its a casting mark,
Assuming the baskets ok then I'd just fit new plates and check the atcuator mechanism rod/bearing/lever as it seems that the pickys show your not the sort to feed the clutch in slowly.You can use fine emery if theres any SMALL burrs ,the heat marks don't matter.
Try comparing the basket with a new one to check any warpage and check your clutchshaft bearing,if its loose then you may have to split the crankcases.Assuming everythings ok ,fit your new plates and RUN THE CLUTCH IN or risk a mechanical disaster.
ps some people forget to put the plain steel plates in in the right order,compare your full set of plates are to the spec and make sure they go in the right way.

I was looking at the manual to see if it had previously been assembled incorrectly but it seems it hasn't. Looks like a new clutch basket to me, or at least the piece that's been damaged. You should be able to order that mid section of the clutch basket on it's own along with 1 friction plate if your on a budget.
This is designed different to a lot of clutches, normally the metal slide plate goes in first to prevent the damage yours has sustained, but yours looks like a more robust design.

the first plate has probably worn more as the hub surface is slippier than that on a steel plate. Or it could be that the other plates have seized at some time - from lack of use or wrong oil and the first plate has taken all the friction.

The correct way to determine plate wear is to measure it with a micrometer or verniers and check the wear limit in the service manual. That one is deffo fubared tho. New plates should sort it.

Don't use a steel plate first as it will wreck the hub fer sure.
