I have often wondered about emissions law and how it is applied when MOTing a vehicle.
When they stick the probe up and do the test how is it measured. I can imagine a few different ways that it could be
Amount of CO2 in a given volume of exhaust.
Amount of CO2 by engine size.
Amount of CO2 by Engine power.
Amount of toxins in a given volume of exhaust.
Amount of toxins by engine size.
Amount of toxins by engine power.
If you modify an exhaust on a car or bike could this cause MOT failures due to emissions (i.e. no cat = higher CO levels)
If this would cause a fail how common is it for people to just keep swapping exhausts back and forth when they have the MOT?
Heres a point, if its based on the model of the bike how does that work when you use a big bore kit or engine transplant. Its obvious that a bigger engine will produce more CO2 and CO emissions. ____________________ Anyone stupid enough to think we will drag a load of wooden horses full of soldiers into our city is certanley stupid enough to drag all of ours into theirs! |

There's no emissions test in the UK bike MOT and as far as I'm aware no plans to add one. I had the cats out of my HN125-8 in fairly short order. What has the planet ever done for me?
[Updated to be specific that I'm talking about the bike MOT] ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Only a car MOT, you can have a cat free bike, no worries.
On cars, sport cars especially, its common for people to have "de-cat" straight through pipes. Louder and free flowing... and just popping the standard one on for MOT.
My car is free from the emissions test, made in 1994.. as standard had 3 cats, but can be done and get a pass on a completely de cat system Too loud though |

Hi
No emissions tests for bikes (probably will be at some point).
For cars it depends on the age. Old cars just a basic percentage. However newer cars are tested when new for actual quantities of various things in the exhaust gas. For the MOT I think the percentages vary as they are not so much measuring a particular level in general rather they measuring a percentage that matches up with what is expected for that model based on what amounts were produced when homologated.
Little to stop people swapping exhausts over between MOTs though
All the best
