so Ive practically finished the DT125R supermoto project and just when I thought it was over an 82 DR125 turns up for £80...

...Complete with a blown engine.. Rolling Eyes valve dropped and smashed the piston up nicely (will post pics up soon).. Good thing is GN/GS125 engines bolt right in and can be had for <£100 Thumbs Up

So the plan is to tidy up, MOT and sell on for a tidy profit..

Bike came with polisport handgaurds (to be sold off), Micron exhaust system (Rare as rocking horse s***!!!), new tyres and drum pads and new carb. Loom is a complete state but electrics did all work fine Thumbs Up wheels are nice and straight although one is gold and one is chrome. still I saw a set of wheels for £20 so thats not a problem.

Have noticed parts for these are dirt cheap just things like heads, rear shocks, tanks, seat etc are extrememly hard to find... Might be something to do with the fact they didnt make many of the earlier DR's...

So on with the progress.. So far I have..

Stripped frame back to metal. waiting for my old man to fire up his new compressor and primer it for me..

painted up the front/rear drum hubs

sourced a replacement swingarm (old one had massive hole!)

polished fork legs (no pitting on fork tubes at all!), cleaned gaiters

resprayed headlight brackets

resprayed lower fork clamp, polished the upper fork clamp..

Still do do.. clean rear shock, spray chain guard, spray new swing arm, find a head for the engine, new piston (barrel looks ok), resray panels, repair/respray tank, sort wiring loom, clean airbox and then bolt it all back together.. will post pics as I go along Thumbs Up

should look like a nice old classic looking scramber when I finished Thumbs Up

how it wouldve looked new..

and the barrel escaped unharmed.. miracle!

this is gonna be a long project.. Im not going to fully restore it just get it running and tidy it up.. prob spend around £300 max.. plus total of the bike which was £400.. Id get my money back at least or hopefully get £500..

also just found out the rear rim is totally dead.. rotted so much around one spoke I managed to pull a whole piece of the rim off with the spoke!! Nice!

got the replacement swingarm today.. thought Id never find one.. Nice one ebay.. 99p + £12 postage Thumbs Up

just spent the last 2 hours getting a seized bolt out.. swinger is nice and solid which is a result Thumbs Up the original one had a hole big enough to fit a golf ball in it..

so next is to get the swingarm and frame primered and painted. then im gonna start on the tank that looks very battered and sad. its been filled at some point to stop it leaking too so thats gotta be pulled of and then inspect the damage, cut it out and then weld a new piece in unless I can find a tank (which I very much doubt)

Then I need a rear wheel and engine......

Rear wheel shouldn't be much of a problem. Finding a nice motor might take a bit of doing, at least at a sensible price.

Id pay upto a ton for a good running engine. Thing is a new head is £70 and I could get a whole engine for that.. Id rather get a whole engine cos id have a spare bottom end to use incase the one I got is wrecked. Something I didnt think about when I bought the bike is that if you drop bits of metal in the crank on a 4t in ends up in the gearbox. Unlike a 2t!

pretty sure theres a couple of DRs at the breakers. i dont think they like to break them though.

is it a vertically splitting engine? ie: no removable sump?

hmm my mate who I bought it off was gonna sell it to the breakers. I assumed they didnt have any u there as he wouldve bought an engine for it if there was. Il have to pop up and see..

and yeh it doesnt have removeable sump so Id have to split the engine to check for debris.. Half the top of the piston is missing so it must be in the gearbox...

frame and swinger has been primered.. old man chucked a layer on to stop it from rusting since Id rubbed em down to bare metal.. might take pics if the flash works alright on my cam..

something i didnt think was a piston is cast alu.. gearbox is like tool steel.. gearbox would chew up and bits of piston.. rings where all intact so might be alright Thumbs Up

Newbie with DR125 Weirdness going on?!?
Remove all Advertisements

Hi this is my first post on this forum, in the hope that someone might be able to shed some light on the engine rebuild I am doing. Here's the background: bought the bike with no paperwork as a field bike - I think the build year is 1987, it has a disc front and 'full floater' monoshock rear end. Decided to rebuild the engine as the big end sounded like it was shot and do a rebore at the same time. The big end was indeed beyond repair and it was cheaper/easier (ahem...) to replace the crank assembly with a new pattern part which was advertised as for the DR125 e/s. I fitted the crank and it was a good fit, put the cases back together with no problems, fitted the clutch, oil pump, gear selector stuff. Flipped the engine over to fit the stator and flywheel whereupon things started to look odd. Stator slotted straight back in, fitted the woodruff key from the old crank into the slot in the new crank - all good so far. When I mounted the flywheel theough, it didn't seem to slide far enough onto the crank such that the pickup coils wasn't lining up with the flywheel, but worse of all, the cover now fouls on the flywheel itself???
ANybody been there before? Am I missing some painfully obvious thing here?
Any thoughts would be most welcome. I m away working this week but could post up some pics at the weekend.
Thanks for giving this your time
