Hey guys and girls Smile

Knowing what my luck is like at the moment, I am interested in getting setup with a recovery team. Something like the AA or whatever so that if i have a break down roadside, Ive got that little bit of security in my mind to help me get home.

AA, Greenflag, RAC?

Cheers everyone Smile

I'll keep an eye on this thread because I'll be buying similar in the near future. At the moment I'm swayed with the AA, RAC will only tow you 10 miles. I broke down 12 mies from a garage and they wanted over £100 to tow me the few extra miles.

I didn't have that sort of money so he offered to drive behind me with his orage flashing lights on while I pushed it 2 miles (this was a busy dual carrigeway mind), but being freezing cold in bike boots and everything I chose not to. So I asked if he could recover to my home, which he could, a few miles in the opposite direction. Thought I was sorted.

Get in the van with him, sign the paper work and expect him to sit there with me (bearing in mind it was below 5 degrees C that day). But no, he says hes off to another job and a van will be with me shortly, a bit peeved I go and wait with my bike in the layby I'd managed to push it to. The truck took 4 hours to come, and one of my toes has had a numb sensation in it ever since from being cold right through to the core.

Couldn't be pissed off with the guy who came to pick me up, he was from a different company, and took me home, got the bike on and off the truck all himeself etc, but its safe to say I won't be using the RAC again.

I've got a similar story with the AA. I'm with ADAC who use the AA in the UK.

My fuel pump died on the way home from work (15miles). I called ADAC who said a van would be out to me. I explained i needed a truck to take the bike home, but they said the AA would only send a van. The van took about 2 hours to get there. I told him i need a truck, he said ok and radioed in. 3 hours later a guy from down the road turns up with a recovery truck. I told him i've been waiting 3 hours and he said we only got a call 20mins ago.

I told ADAC about the poor experience I received at the hands of the AA and they were shocked.

For my car, I am with Green Flag, and they are pants! I have had to call them three times, each time they used a sub contractor, and these sub contractors are not mechanics, they are just recovery drivers, they turn up, have the obligitory look under the bonnet, little fiddle with the HT leads, spray a bit of WD40 around, and then say "No sorry mate, will need to tow it".

I pay for the whole package, roadside, relay, homestart etc, not once have they got my car going again.

I don't think I have ever actually seen a Green Flag vehicle! Perhaps that says something itself.

For my bike it came with the insurance, again homestart, roadside, relay etc. I don't know who they use for it, as I have never had to call them.

I am with insurance choice. Full cover including EU = 69 squids.

I had to use them twice last year. First one was in central london (knighstbridge). Took them 20 minutes to arrive.
Second one in hertfordshire. This time it took 35 minutes.

They are no good for older bikes though, as they the price goes up and they won't do European cover.

Ideally you want something that covers you, not the bike or vehicle.

Currently with Green Flag, never had to use them, scoping out Auto Aid now. Hmm, Equity Red Star, not the best reputation.

Checking that it includes...

Arrow Self and spouse.
Arrow Roadside fix, or recovery to any location.
Arrow Overnight hotel accommodation.
Arrow Accident damage is covered.
Arrow Home start or recovery to garage.
Arrow Stolen/recovered recovery.
Arrow Vehicle includes motorcycle. There is no mention in the current full policy document of it being > 125cc.
Arrow No limit on age. Just "must be in a roadworthy condition"

Yup, that all looks OK. £38 looks like a steal. I think Green Flag can suck my tailpipe at renewal time.

i had RAC cover on my car and only called them out once and in fairness i placed the call incase i couldnt fix it while i was waiting (45 mins but i waqs in the arse end of nowhere ) managed to find a small village motorfactor that actually luckily happened to have the correct mk2 golf gti driveshaft in stock

and i had the car jacked up the old one off and had almost got the new one on when he arrived i explained the problem he got out a proper jack jacked the car up higher so i could get under it easily and took over doing the oily bits while i washed up with the sink in the back of his van done and dusted said he would report that i hadfixed the problem before he arrived so that it woudlnt count as one of my limited callouts .. good bloke good service and no issues!

waited 3 hours at the side of the road for the aa with three small kids in the car well ... 10 9 and 7 so not really small kids second puncture of the day so had already used the spare and not had a chance to replace it they moaned about having to take me to a garage so i could get a replacement tyre and said i only had cover to take me home (at which point i produced my policy documents stating that i had FULL cover )

the most annoying thing is when you ring to ask how long ittl be and they say "he will be right with you" and you wait another hour

I've got breakdown cover included on my bank account with Lloyds, not sure which company they use, I think it's RAC but don't quote me on that. Covers myself on whatever vehicle I'm travelling on or in. Joint accounts get cover for each account holder. They give you specific number to call which I've got on my phone and in my wallet but I think you call the Lloyds bit and then they call out the recovery.

The account comes with European travel insurance and some other stuff which I've never used. Cost about £8 each month but the premiums don't change if you call them out all the time as it's incorporated in the account. Thumbs Up

Don't know if this is something you could consider or if it is in fact any good, anybody ever used this successfully ?

Yes, it says they don't have any vehicles. They are an insurance company.

Some are mechanics that can fix things but there are a lot that can't, you do have to look at the bigger picture.

Most 'mechanics' are absolutely screwed when it comes to finding a fault until such point as you can plug a computer into it.

State of play as it is. used to be a time you'd take car/bike in, bloke would know whats what and after a bit of tinkering tell you the fault and fix it.

Nowadays they plug it in, it says alternator, they change it.
You no longer get an ampage test, voltage test, continuity of wires tests and earth checks etc, they haven't in the main the slightest idea.

Computer says no and all that

I'm with Green flag and had to use them twice (puncture, and a snapped drive belt). I have recovery plus, and I make sure I use it because the only person touching my bike with tools is me.

Love people like you

Had a bloke one night refuse to let me look at his motor, had it recovered and then got a complaint a few days later from the a-hole as it was a fuse gone and i should have fixed it. Shocked What a total cnut.

On the other side, a Harley. matter of days old broke down in Bath, I started pulling it apart and the bloke cleaned and carefully put down each bit as i removed them.

Fixed it and off he went. Happy bunny

AA breakdown, recovery & relay package to any UK destination, for any car or motorcycle, whether I`m driving/riding or as a passenger ................... £27 for the year (this year).

It should`ve been £77 with is the AA`s online price, but using quidco (a cash back website) as a referal site. quidco pays me £50 cash back, as its them who link me thru to the AA. The catch?? .............. I did have to pay £77 in full to the AA earlier this year, BUT 3-4 month later quidco paid me the £50 cash back.

Techically speaking this deal is only for new customers to the AA with a automatic 12 monthly renewal / Cancelation clause.
However every time the AA send me my annual renewal (this year was £130) I ring them up an argue its too expensive, tell them not to debit my card/account etc on the date they state they are going to take the monies, and inform them I intend to cancel my cover from the expiry date. (They will instantly offer to price match the online price) but I still cancel.
Then the day after its expired, I renew a "new" membership via the process above. The most I`ve ever paid in the last 5-6 years for the same cover above is £36 once cashback is repaid
Quidco do however take a one off annual service charge of £5. This covers ALL cashback transactions through out the year, so far I`ve made over £500 in cashback payments for buying clothes, electronics etc that I still would have bought from the came websites, albeit with cashback
