Quick question about power coating and the VIN number.

My bikes frame is the stock painted silver colour and in the future (provided my engine issue can be fixed) i'd love to have it powder coated black in addition to my wheels, forks and swingarm.

The main concern I have during this is my VIN number which is stamped on the side of the headstock. It looks like it is printed on with a stamp. The lettering does not appear to be raised.

So the question is, surely power coating would cover this VIN number? If not how do you get around the issue?

If the number is covered, what repercusions would there be when it is sold or scrapped?

A lot of people just powder coat over it. Depending on the thickness of the coat you can usually make it out. A good coater will do a thin coat in the vin area. Either that or tell them to give that area a quick blast with black spray paint to blend it in then mask the vin.

MOTs, selling etc etc will be dodgy if the VIN is covered.

Spray it then mask it or let them coat it but scrape the area away yourself afterwards.

It does need to be legible.
