I'm looking to upgrade soon and am stuck between these two bikes.
Anyone have a preference?
Pro's, con's between the two?

Insurance for me is around the same for both, around £350 at 18.

Cheers.

Ones a hyper tourer (Basically Honda's 'Busa but earlier) and ones a superbike, they are very different and it depends on what you want from the bike more than anything.

Going to be used for a short daily commute and a 200m round blast now and again.
Practicality isn't really an issue as I've now got a car too.

It's really just to ask what they're both like to live with every day and which most people would prefer.

TL, big twin, low down power is immense apparently!!
Blackbird, ridden one for about 5 minutes, comfier than an armchair and goes like a rocket.

Preference, Honda.. reason, I like IL4 Laughing

Wouldn't say blackbird is track focused at all..
It weighs a lot.. when I say alot.. like LOADS. Dont know about how you are built.. but im 11 stone and near 6ft.. it was heavy for me Laughing

Pretty much. The bikes are chalk and cheese, as a roadbike I'd lean toward the blackbird.

Yes.... I was just wondering how he was going to restrict a SBB to 33bhp!
With folk older, and bandying £2000 permium prices about for less extreme machines, I wonder of a nought has been missed off the end...

For the use your describe the blackbird would be a better fit.
Commuting on a tl1000 which in my experience has a very heavy clutch wouldnt be a bundle of fun.
Both bikes will feel very heavy especially as at 18 im sure you've not ridden much above 170kg.
Also a tl isnt a forgiving bike whilst the blackbird has the usual honda ease of use.
Find a couple of second hand examples in local bike shops and take a seat on them. You may find a bike that everyone else describes as comfy completely unusable whilst a so called superbike fits u better.

Just a quick suggestion, thought about a cbr954? costs about the same second hand and will do everything u want it to. (unless insurance says no)

FJR1300s collect water around the top of the engines and corrode, give it a liberal dose of ACF50 or FS365.

VFR VTECs are an absolute ballache to do a full service on (if including valve clearances)

Don’t forget these items if you’re going for the Honda

If you can afford it, I’d say get the TLR. I have a 2002 unmolested model and i can’t say i have had any ill effects from the rotary damper. I’m planning on a big trip on the thing to see if i can get it to play up but so far so good, and I’ve ridden it as hard as the ZX7R on roads that i know.
It’s a bit George Best on juice but then i can’t see you finding a problem with that for the use intended.

Edit (due to sensible head of Luthian) Laughing :- It’s not the most powerful superbike around but at 18, if you’ve had little experience of a machine that could throw you off then be weary. The TLR is something to be respected, it has a lot of low down grunt which, with a happy hand, can spin up the rear in the dry.

TL, not even a contest.

Anyone can pin a throttle in a straight line.

And if your going TL, go for the better looking mans version. The S, not the toned down girly-esq R.

Its a mild version of the S with revised mapping and a much smoother softer powerband. Even moreso by the time it reached the TL1000.

What?! Laughing

No they aren't. The TL is nearly 200kg and pretty lardy in the bends the Blackbird is a tourer.

Another one!

The TLR has about 20 more BHP than the TLS, so it wasn;t a mild version. and I have no idea what you mean by...

They made a TLS then a TLR, there wasn't another one. The engine then went into the SV1000.

I wouldnt believe that, the R isnt 'toned down' to the S at all.

Thats kinda like saying a RSVR is a toned down Tuono Rolling Eyes

Ridden both, owned one as well as a load of other V-twins

The reason was the frame on the S and the rotary rear shock (both models have them), as well as the lack of a steering damper on the original models.

Hense why youll see alot of aftermarket rear shocks on TL's on ebay and autotrader.

My TLR was in no way a 'girly bike'

My 2 pence:

The Blackbird is a license killer. Its very fast and very deceptive in its speed and is an IL4 bike and built for going long distances reasonably comfortable.

The TL is a hooligans V Twin with enough low end grunt to turn the world and tear up the tarmac whle you stay in the same place. It will kill you deader than a dead thing if you're not careful but it is way more fun and sounds like thunder.

Not that I've a V twin fan or anything but....

Blackbird fast but https://mix.raven-radio.com/emotes/cv.gif

The TL fast but: https://www.subzerosiam.com/forum/images/smilies/scared.gif Praying Mr. Green

No it hasn't got 20bhp more Laughing The S had a HUGE increase in power within a 2000rpm rev range. (5000-7000rpm IIRC). The R smoothed out this dramatic power increase. Whilst it might have given a couple of bhp more (not 20bhp Laughing ), its delivery was much much smoother and softer than the earlier S which made it so much more rideable.

But simple smooth power delivery (not that the R had a totally smooth delivery at all) is not always what makes a bike fun (i.e 200bhp in a Civic Type R is smooth, and fairly nippy for a car, but a 2.0 in a poxy vauxhall corsa with 50bhp less, is raw, skittish, and mental in its delivery, all be it slower than the Honda. Does that make the Honda more fun? No-where near!!! But this is just an example).

Other part was a typo, I meant SV1000.

Some people take words literally too strongly. I never said the R was a girls bike Rolling Eyes Jessshhhh.....
