Hi,

Ive got a job interview tommorow ( Very Happy ) and one of the bits of paperwork i need to take is a large birth certificate, i think he said A4. Mine is only a small one , the birth certificate is small too Wink Does this matter? What is the difference?
I had a choice of birth certificate or passport, the only passport i have is an expired one from when i was 12. Im 20 now. I really want to get this job so want to get the paperwork right Embarassed

Secondly,
If i get the job, and the hours/pay suit my needs, il need to resign from my current job. I have a contract with them, and need to give 2 weeks notice. I have never formally resigned from anywhere, so whats the procedure? Letter to the manager? Roughly how would you word it? Im leaving because they have cut my hours from 31 to 20 and the new manager is fucking up the rotas etc.
Thanks BCF

On the second point, make your resignation letter positive. No point in committing a negative impression to paper. If they give a shit they'll organise an exit interview.

I would put something like:

I am writing to provide notice of my intention to terminate my contract of employment with yourselves with effect from.........

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the.........(training?/Opportunities?/experience?) and wish you all the best for the future.

Yours sincerely

The birth certificate thing is a HM Government scam!

My ex recently had to provide a birth certificate, they wanted the full size one, as far as I'n aware, unless your parents specifically requested one at the time, the full size certificates ceased to be issued around 1967. HMG knows this but are encouraging people not to accept the, smaller copies as proof.

You can order a copy online, for a fee of course, (you can pay extra if you need it sharpish). To summarise, they're ferkin' useless! They managed to loose the first application, then they sent out the wrong certificate, they finally got it right on the third attempt. Rolling Eyes

As far as your letter of resignation goes, keep it short and sweet, and thank them for your time there, don't burn any bridges!
If you have to work a notice period, you'll need to put in something along the lines of "accepting this letter as one months notice of my resignation.....ete etc."

Scam and a half is this wanting a A4 birth cert......

When daughter was born I only got a std small one. Does not have parents on it.....

She has just applied for a job and that too wanted a A4 one. As I had gone with her. I asked why this one was no good and was told because it does not have parents on it.....
I replied who is applying for the job me or my daughter.... All I got was well its company policy.

In the end it cost £15 to get one from the local registrar office.
If you still live in the area you were born in check the council site and you can go in person and collect it on the spot.

Sounds like an absolute joke, as with the whole government really Confused

Thanks for the advice, il write a letter out tonight so if i get offered a job i can take it straight in. Il post it up here first if thats ok so i can get your opinion on it. Im not looking to leave in a nasty way, im good friends with quite a few people there, which is making it a harder decision. Its only the new manager (who has been there 2 weeks) who is screwing me over.

Im starting to get really worried about my interview in the morning, i want the job but its showing it. Im a really nervous/shy person. Im hoping they can see how suited i am to the job.

Thanks again

If you really want to land that job tommorrow then you should get to bed and get some shut-eye instead of playing on 'tnet all night Wink
Best of luck Thumbs Up

These days you get the full size one for free when you register a child. The small one lacks parents nationality or something, I can't really remember. You could just pop in to the Registry office and get a new one, they could probably do it there and then depending on their work load, but you're likely to have to pay more.

If you want it right away, you're going to have to go to the district you were born in. Otherwise it'll be an order service.

Do NOT resign from your old job until you have the new one in writing and contracts signed. You may just find yourself without any job....

If the new job is any good, they will understand a possible delay in resigning; it's in their hands how quickly to get you to that point anyway.

Completely agree with this!!! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Your resignation letter should refer to the role you are resigning from, the terms of your contract (ie 'with effect' from 'in accordance with' etc)

You should absolutely NOT give a reason for leaving. You are perfectly within your rights to resign because it it Thursday if you want to and your are not obliged to give any reason at all. If you are asked you should only mention it verbally and usually only a good move if you are leaving the door open for them to make a counter offer ie. increase your hours, pay, offer you a company Jag, office, parking space etc.

On the birth certificate issue, I would provide them with what you have and write a covering letter stating that this is all that was issued under the rules at the time of your birth. If it is a full certificate there are many different versions and sizes of these depending upon where in the UK you were born (assuming UK Birth). The reason why they are asking is to confirm UK work permit status and you can prove this in other ways ie Passport. However, if your birth certificate is entitled 'Abbreviated Certificate of Birth' you should consider getting a full one anyway.
