Driving along in the car earlier today after going around a few garden centres looking at stuff. about a mile from home and I get a blue Grande punto following up my backside. The driver clearly has better things to focus on like trying to intentionally cut up a white Sean leon when the Leon tried to undertake him on a round about. Que me realising these two asshats were together.

A short while along I make a turn off, Punto boots it up past and carries on the Leon follows me up the turning. The punto is clearly trying to get around a different way as we see him powering down another road further up trying to "head us off" so to speak but fails and ends up still behind his mate.
Onto another road now and up to 60 mph and this leon gets so far up my arse I cant even see his number plate in my rear view mirror in a half mile we will enter a 30mph zone and for now he is still following. He keeps edging out like he wants to overtake and an oncoming car actually flashes him as he seems to be driving with one wheel over the line.

Now this is when I did something which thinking back was a little silly but would serve this dickhead right. About 100 yards before the sign I would normally brake gently to slow to 30 and carry on. This time I may have left it untill maybe 50 yards.
This guy still up my arse. As I lift off the throttle the gap narrows further as he lifts himself I go quite firmly on the brakes. Now I didnt throw the anchor out. it was just "firm" braking down to 30 mph from 60. All I hear is tire screetching and lots of smoke in my mirrors as this guys ABS is working over time even on a dry road, best thing about it...his mate in the punto behind was also tailgating about 3 feet behind the leon and shit himself as well.

He started on the horn and waving his arms around flashing headlights. so gave him a Middle Finger and carried on at 30.

I wonder if he will think twice now about following someone less then 4 feet behind. Afaik I didnt break any laws doing this, It was by no means an emergency stop or wreakless as it was just firm braking. The kind you may do if a traffic light goes red ahead and you cant quote make it so you brake firmly.

Anyway thats my story. ofc if I was on my bike I wouldnt have thaught about it as I would have been under his car very likely. Any of you guys given someone the shock of their lives when there following too closely?

if you had slammed on the anchors and he went into the back of you he would have been entirely at fault, i was praying for that at the end of the story Laughing
although chances are the little contraception malfunction probably isnt insured anyway

To bring it back to "bike" chat, I had an Astra right up my arse last week. Rather than booting it away or slowing down, I got a bit inventive, took some observations, moved to the right hand side of the (empty) road and braked hard to force him to undertake.

If they can't get the job done themselves, you can always help them.

Pretty sure in any riding/driving test you have to check your mirrors BEFORE you brake.
I suspect if there was no 'emergency' reason to brake, you could also get done for braking harshly with someone up your back side.

Personally, I would be pretty cautious about such things too - all you need is a moment where he's commenting to his passenger about the dodgy bike in front and attention is away and we're in to the case of 'blame'.
But how ever much compensation you get, losing the use of a leg or worse probably isn't a great thing.

Sometimes the bigger man ISN'T the bigger arse Wink.

Correct, creating the 'situation of emergency'. I dealt with a claim like this at Saga, old boy slammed his brakes on because the guy behind was following too closely, old boy admitted he did it on purpose to prove a point and the majority of blame went to the old boy.

I was slowing for a 30 mph zone. it wasnt just a random stab at the pedal. If I didnt brake then I would have been speeding through a built up area. Also the fact that he was up my arse at 60 at that point showed he had little or no intention to observe the speed limit himself.

Hate to say this, but it's not your job to police the roads.

My wife is guilty of being dragged into road rage situations, but you're nearly always better to just let them past if they're driving like morons.

Whos Sean Leon. Google only returns black Sean Leons.

You got balls. If a chav was up my ass, the last thing I would be thinking about is breaking harshly.

I used to have an ex-army Landrover that had a convoy mode lighting switch, basically this disabled the brake lights so the enemy couldn't see you at night, was great fun in situation like the one described. Very Happy

Personally I just gradually brake to at least show your brake lights and keep doing so every time the gap narrows too much, they usually get the picture.
Certainly wouldn't allow or encourage someone to undertake me, I always defend my nearside space.
I have been guilty of tailgating myself, not a good habit really and I try to avoid it but when you're itching to get somewhere quick you kind of like to make the car in front know this. Not clever.

Does it ever make anyone actually go quicker, or do people just all slow down?

No but they might move over, on a motorway dual carriageway etc. I try not to do it but I think its easy to get frustrated given the acceleration difference between bike and car and it tends to just 'happen' due to this. I don't necessarily agree with aggressive riding or driving though!
I often find just riding quickly with headlights on makes people notice you enough to generally make allowances for you to pass them, rural roads and cars often seem to want to dive into the hedges to let you past.
Certainly you don't want to end up planted in the back of the car in front's boot on a bike though!

Going the other way, I fitted a switch to a Mk III Escort that turned the brake lights on manually. That was quite fun. Very Happy

If you're driving along a 60 Mph zone and see a 30 Mph zone then you should be expecting the vehicle in front to brake and you should adjust your following distance accordinly. THe later the vehicle in front leaves it's breaking the firmer you should expect it to be......

These chavs were plainly driving like no*bs so I would have just let them get on with it hoping that they would leave the road and connect with the next available solid concrete pillar. It's difficult not get drawn in but you don't want to put yourself in a position where you could get some liability for an accident.

They'll get their reverse karma soon Thumbs Up

I generally slow down a bit to give myself more front door space so that should I have to stop suddenly I can do so at a slower pace and avoid being rear ended by the tailgater.

Sorry, but you're a tit. If someone is following close behind and you don't like it, it's best to slow down and let them pass. Or even find a different route.

You assumed far too many things about that situation, and seemed quite happy to perhaps start an accident chain reaction just because it would have been his fault on paper rather than yours.

It isn't your job to teach people a lesson on the roads. Just chill out and find another route, let him turn himself into an accident statistic away from you.

Far too many motorists think its ok to brake test HGV's like this because they do it regularly to cars in the manner you describe, and its an incredibly stupid thing to do. Has happened to me on a few occasions. People really have no idea of the destructive power they are messing with.

I used to do that to people if they got too close, most of them get the message, I used to have a Punto that I didn't mind of get bumped (hence the big dent in the bonnet from some bad parking!).

Now I tend to slow down...a lot. My thinking being...if we crash, I want it to be at as low a speed as possible! And it generally pisses people off even more if they can't overtake.

I do miss my Punto for that...nice and nippy to speed up when the speed limit went up...my Focus is crap lol...bloody diesels!

Just troll them. They want you to go faster, go slower. If they flash and peep, smile and wave then go even slower. You'll know when you're succeeding because their face will go purple and they'll start banging on the steering wheel in frustration.

Wobbling about on the bike tends to make them back off too, as does backfiring the engine on the kill switch.

The Jawa was good, if you hit the kill switch, flicked on the choke and held the throttle wide open for a bit before flicking the kill switch back on. Instead of backfiring, it used to spray 2-stroke pre-mix out of the exhausts. They'd hit the wipers and suddenly have an opaque windscreen covered in oil.

Or do what my Dad did one time which was to stop his car in the middle of the road, walk over to them and tell them "If you get any closer up the back of me, you'll have to marry me.".

Tailgater is obv.

Why should i inconvenience myself just cos some asshat is tailgating? Surely they should sort the situation out themselves?

Tailgating in a HGV is insane and inconsiderate IMO. A blatent use of 'my vehicle is bigger than yours' just to intimidate.
