PostPosted: 12:03 - 01 Jul 2011    Post subject: offensive emails at work Reply with quote

Right, long story short is i'm leaving my place for a new job today and I'm owed about a week holiday pay before i leave which the accounting staff have told me will be paid the end of the month. In the mean time i noticed an email between the senior management staff (helping having access to the companies network) basically slating my work which i have sort of taken offence to and wrote to send a very polite reply just to show that i'm offended but havent sent it yet. Question is could they with hold my holiday pay? I don't have time to take it all and cant find my employment contract. Don't want to approach anyone at work with this either..

Thanks

so you read someone elses emails by abusing your position in IT?

i'd be looking not to be sacked.

(someone here did similar and promptly got sacked and hasn't worked in IT since, not sure if that was by choice though)

Wouldn't risk it mate.. take note of their email addresses and do it after you get paid Laughing

Although, they can refuse to give you a reference should you apply for a new job in the future Thumbs Up

1. You are leaving so why care? You are getting paid holiday pay, leave it at that.

Why risk a bad reference/losing pay just because someone where you will soon not work wrote something offensive.

You're leaving, leave it at that...

You're getting payed and you're moving on to hopefully better things, emails like that just show you're making the right choice, rise above it...

Unless you really are shit at your job and the email was justified Laughing ...

Conclusion...Rise above it, move on... Thumbs Up

Just on the lines that they treat the majority of staff in this way where i am in a position do help out the others i actually like before leaving and hopefully show the managment that they should have more respect for their staff.

Searching for a lost mail in message tracking centre which had a similar title. So i didn't go poking through one account.

I have plenty of references so no probs there.

I might forward it to my personal email and send it once the pay comes through Thumbs Up

I doubt they could stop paying you altogether, but it's not a far cry to assume there will be "a mistake in the system" which means you might not see it for 6 months.

Do you really think you're opinions of this persons opinion of your work is going to start a revolution where the remaining workers stand up to the tyranny of senior management and begin to rape and pillage until justice is served (or they at least throw a free pack of digestives in the tea room every morning)? No, me neither, so just plod along until you're in your new job and enjoy the finer things in life like Blunts, 40's and bitches....

Let it slide mate, who gives a shit if some arsehole you will no longer be working for is annoyed that you will no longer be working for him.

(First go through his emails and see if he is doing anything dodgy like cheating on his wife, making racist remarks, sexism, offensive language about his boss etc etc and forward it to an outside account until you are paid, then forward it to the relevant parties.)

I agree with Bazza you shouldn't have been snooping through someone else's emails coz it's illegal and immoral, but you've done it and seen something you don't like you can't deal with that AND think it's a good idea to let on what you've done.

Sounds like you need a double-helping of growing-up TBH.

That's about as believable as those guys that go to A&E having accidentally "fallen on a shampoo bottle".

Rolling Eyes

Edit: Yes, this is obviously spam. Good call with the rating there, Slick. You've successfully thwarted my evil plan to flood BCF with subliminal Head & Shoulders marketing. Thumbs Up Mr. Green Thumbs Up

I believe it is possible to stumble on something you shouldnt by accident, then keep reading when you know you shouldnt.

One place I was at, I looked through some folders on a shelf, and there were the letters of offers of employment to my colleagues, so I knew what salary they were all on. Interesting thing was, the boss was on about the same as the lazy top sales guy, and they all gave the boss a hard time because they thought he was on loads of money, but he wasnt. He was a nice chap just a bit inept in some areas. I really wanted to tell them to give the guy a break and that he wasnt as well paid as they thought, but I didnt.

Its naughty to find out, but its unprofessional to tell people, or reveal you have been naughty looking at things you shouldnt have.

If you are leaving, why kick up a fuss, and then stress yourself worrying about withheld wages. Leave, take the money and get on with the new job.

You could do worse than contemplate what the "criticisms" that were made actually said, and see whether or not there may have been some truth to them.

Look at yourself (honestly) and try to use the criticisms constructively to see if you can improve yourself in the new job.

New job means fresh slate: learn lessons and hopefully move on.

Lesson number 1: remember not to abuse your position by reading other people's emails, cos see where it gets you?

Hope the new job goes well. Wink Thumbs Up

Hey your leaving so you'll no doubt get blamed for every IT issue for 6 months after you leave anyhow....thats the way things seem to happen when someone leaves a company for better prospects Smile Just be glad you made the right choice!! Wink

You work in a capacity where you have access to peoples email, and you actually have to ask this? Seriously?

You'd be looking at instant dismissal without a doubt. No, they can't withhold your holiday pay, but a) IT circles are smaller than you think - word will get around that you're not to be trusted (which, let's be honest here, you're not), and b) your reference will make a point of saying "was dismissed for gross misconduct"

If you value your career in any way, shut up.

very good reply hellkat, puts things in perspective. I'm still relatively young and a little stubborn at times i think. Anyway i thought about it then clocked out at half 4 and went to the pub with a load of them to celebrate my leaving. Seems like alot are un happy at that place.

Thanks for the wishes on the new place Thumbs Up

That always seems to be the case! The old IT manager gets blamed for every thing at that place when he was such a nice bloke who would bend over backwards to help out!
