I recently bought a car that had been off the road for 2 years and as a result the battery was flat.

I have jump started the car a few times but is the battery beyond charging?

I have 1 of those battery chargers that you use for keeping the bike healthy over the winter months. Would this give any life into the battery and allow me to start the car with it?

Or is it well and truly fucked?
And I need to buy another battery?

The car has no alternator on it, so starting it and letting the alternator charge is not possible at this moment in time.

I'd say it's dead personally. Batteries that have been left like that lose their ability to hold an electrical charge.

You may well be able to get a bit of charge into the battery, but chances are it won't hold that charge.

I'd just get a new battery and then you have some peace of mind too. Thumbs Up!

It is almost certainly fucked but if you have a charger with a recovery/desulphating mode then it is worth a go, no harm done trying Thumbs Up .

You'll also probably find that any petrol you had in it has gone off. Might be worth flushing the tank out first if you can, or put a temp tank on if you can get something suitable.

The petrol is fine surprisingly. I thought that would have gone off but it is running the engine so must be ok.

Unlikely to need flushing. I've run engines on stuff over 5 years old. Just dilute it with fresh and it'll be fine Thumbs Up
I also have a tank of 20year old fuel, leaded fuel at that, vile stuff. 5mins exposure sees you with a nagging headache.

As for the battery, try charging it, if it's dead it won't hold a charge and you're decision is made. One thing though, I'd suggest charging it outside, wet cell batteries can become unstable. It's very rare but they can explode (I think there are videos on YouTube), I tend to treat them with caution if they are an unknown.

My optimate revived the car battery after it was 100% dead last winter. After two days charging it's in better condition than the brand new one in the car.

If you have a decent optimate / (Oxford Version), give it a go.
