Only really need something for town riding, so good handling is a bonus would a kwak 636 be too sporty for town?

Town riding, 125

No point paying silly petrol/tax/insurance/tyres if you are town riding.

To be fair, I'd be very happy with a 125 as long as I wasn't doing >10 miles.

What about a supermoto? Maybe a KTM 640/690?

I chose a GSXR1000 K6 for easy town riding.

Not for everyone, but gives you the best tools possible to get from A to B as quickly as you can want.

I find it less fun on open roads - where going fast easily I find a bit boring compared to lower power bikes.

If you want a 600 for town riding then get something where your ass isn't going to be higher than your head. Sports bikes for a lot of people are a pain in town - they are small, have crap mirrors, hard suspension, are very leant forward, high pegs, low bars etc etc etc.

Something upright like a 600 naked (hornet/fazer) or supermoto (DRZ400 for example) or even a TDM900/XT600E depending on what you like to do with it on the weekend. If it is just for town riding and you don't intend on carving up the countryside then a 125 or 250 would be fine, cheap fuel/tax/consumables/insurance etc, maybe even a CB500 as a compromise between a bit of performance and cheapness.

I must admit the GSXR1000 made an excellent bike for lightspeed through early morning traffic Had the mirrors folded in at most points

If its town and you want to save fuel, get some 125.
If fuel/tyres/tax/insurance is no issue the GSXR1000 all the way

If I was getting something for pure town/city stuff, I'd get a supermoto like the Suzy DZR400.

It's tall so you can see over traffic and have a bit more road presence, singles are easy to maintain and the 400 would pack enough punch for blipping between lights etc whilst maintaining decent fuel economy.

See, im still quite young (23) and quite flexi but have a ruined spine courtesy of a ford galaxy... but I found the 1000 pretty comfy, probably a bit more so than the Daytona I had, that was "big" for a sports 6

For my commute through town, I didn't find the GSXR any less comfortable than the KTM690.
Same for longer journeys too, I reckon.

Oh and I should add the caveat that I DID get bad upper back/neck ache with a heavy caberg (flip, internal sunvisor, etc) on sports bikes due to the leant over position, while I was find on the KTM.
However a decent helmet (Shoei) sorted it entirely.

I quite fancy a drz and one has just popped up for sale locally too.
Don't really want to go as small as a 125 prefer a bigger engine
But saying that i would have a vespa again anyond got a vespa for sale?

Guy who parks next to me commutes every day on a (lush) 636, 40 odd mile round trip (Bristol to Bath so almost all town work) and he loves it.
