PostPosted: 18:57 - 23 Apr 2009    Post subject: NS125F rebuild Reply with quote

I did start a thread ages ago about this but as I didn't do any work on it for a couple of years I thought I'd start a new one.

I always had bikes in my teens and really wanted to get back on two wheels before I got too old. My missus wasn't really keen as a couple of my mates had recently passed their test, jumped straight onto a big sports bike and promptly wrote the bike and nearly themselves off. As a compromise I said I would get a 125 that needed some work, rebuild it and ride it for a while before doing my test.

So I bought this knackered NS125F with a siezed engine

https://img2031.photobox.co.uk/627429258e4e819b7ef94e48cdfec754b5ff997adf44bf0db2e77f22bacd06b5f918fc0e.jpg

and stripped it down

Then I bought some new bits ready to put it back together (including a complete engine as it was cheaper than a new barrel)

https://snap36.photobox.co.uk/48087565236d0b3a88d574e4a9d61978385a6faf915fe0f39246163c.jpg

https://snap25.photobox.co.uk/47365140ebe62ea92b1ed3e5592454f8a44dcc00528739993a5bccf9.jpg

Then it sat in the shed in bits for a couple of years as other things took priority. This year I decided to crack on with it again so I thought I'd put up some progress pics. I know its not exactly a desirable machine but I thought it might be usefull/intersting for some.

Firstly I had the frame blasted and powder coated as this was the main reason the rebuild came to a halt.

Since then I've rebuilt the forks and replaced the seals. Fitted taper roller bearings and installed the front end.

Still got loads to do but I need to wait for a few parts to arrive for some of it. Also fitting the NS125R clocks I bought is going to be a bit harder than I thought. Making up a bracket should be easy enough but I'm struggling to make them fit behind the headlight cowl so may have to have a rethink.

As requested a few more pics. Fitted and painted some parts this weekend and replaced a couple of dodgey connectors on the wiring loom. I'm not taking as much time as I'd liked over things as I'm trying to get as much done as possible before the extension on my house is finished. Ideally I need to get it on two wheels and running before then as I'll have too much work to do to spend any time on it.

what fuel tank you using?

because if its a 'f' tank i'd try and keep the 'f' clocks rather than R as the f tanks have fuel gauges on them and hold almost 1L extra fuel.

also for a little more poke up high you can chop the atac bolt shorter. i see you should have 2 like i do Very Happy . can swap them around for sifferent styles of riding.just noticed teh allspeed pipe Very Happy

oh if you need a mudhuard i have 2 BRAND new white ones here Very Happy

I was going to use the black fuel tank as its in slightly better nick. Not sure if its from an F or an R. Can't use the F clocks I have as they are broken. Fuel gauge doesn't bother me as I've never owned a bike that had one, always used to just have a look in the tank to see how much fuel was in there.

Atac bolt?? Is that the one in the side of the cylinder barrel? Will the allspeed exhaust mean it's pretty much de-restricted? What restrictions did these bikes have

Might be interested in a mudguard, going to see if I can repair the one I've got first though.

Hi

They were restricted in the exhaust, plus not being fitted with the operating mechanism for the ATAC system.

Not sure that cutting the bolt down should help. The chamber is meant to be closed at high revs for full power. Cutting the bolt mean the chamber isn't closed which would mean it is in the low revs situation. Might well mean you have more low down power but you will lose top end power.

All the best

Keith

Thanks Keith,

Any idea what the jets should be to match the allspeed? Hopefully they are already the right ones but as it was seized when I bought it I'm not sure.

Hi

Afraid I am not sure on the jetting. Probably safest to go up a couple of sizes on the main jet and then work down.

All the best

What a great thread.
I got a NS125R last week and I'm still at the stripping down stage. I've never owned a bike before, so it's a steep learning curve for me.
Can I ask how much the powder coating was? I was thinking about it, but might just go with paint. (Incase the project goes belly up.)

Powder coating on the frame was £25 for silver, it would have only been £15 for black. Paint would have cost me that much for rattle cans. It did cost £35 for shot blasting though.

Yep keith i cut mine down th help with the flat spot of power that it seemed to have @ 5-6k revs. its good for country lanes with a chiped down one and if your goign out on a screamer ride i just put the full oen back in ..

as for restrictors just the exhaust on these and the mainjet in the carb to a 120

Cheers, let me know if you have one. Been trying to find a decent one on Ebay.

Just checked and the jets are standard, 110 main and 48 pilot. So you reckon a 120 is what I should use with the allspeed?

Needle looks a little bent too so may need replacing but can't read whats stamped on it.

Did a bit more the last couple of nights. Made some brackets to fit the clocks and a few other bits and bobs. Need to modify the headlight cowl now to fit over the R clocks.

Need to get some new dust seals to fit the shock and and linkages. Also struggling to get the new lower bush in the linkage. Almost got it in yesterday using the draw bolt method but stripped the thread on th only bolt I had that was suitable.

I also started modifying the fairing to fit round the new clocks but haven't taken any pics yet.

Thanks, swing arm isn't perfect and is a slightly different colour than the frame but its not bad for rattle cans.

Recovered the seat today and I'm quite chuffed with it to be honest. Bought half a metre of black vinyl from Dunhelm for £3.49 and stapled it on. Going to try and make a strap to hide the indent from the old one.

Some more pics for those who are interested. Fitted some new grips and bar ends today althought the pics didn't turn out too good. Also took some mock ups with the side panels, seat and tank on to get an idea what its going to look like.

Don't worry the tank will get resparayed, gonig to keep the panels as they are though i think.
